Walk for Peace Traffic Advisory 

The Walk for Peace, a peaceful walk by Buddhist monks promoting unity and compassion, is expected to enter Fairfax County at Richmond Highway and Furnace Road on Sunday, February 8th. The arrival time may be subject to change based on the monks’ progress.

The monks will proceed through Fairfax County along the following route:

Route and Schedule Information

Sunday
• Monks will enter Fairfax County at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. 
• Note: Northbound Richmond Highway (Route 1) will be fully closed at Furnace Road in Lorton as the monks use the entire roadway.
• Monks will walk to the Buddhist Temple on Backlick Road (parade and peace ceremony).
• 1:00–1:30 PM: Depart temple, turn left onto Route 1, continue north, then turn right onto Sherwood Hall Lane.
• 6:00–7:00 PM: Peace prayer service.

Monday
• 7:00 AM: Walk resumes.
• Route: Sherwood Hall Lane → Fort Hunt Road → Morningside Lane → George Washington Parkway (northbound).
• Continue on George Washington Parkway for 5 miles to the Alexandria city line, where the City of Alexandria Police Department will assume escort.

Traffic & Safety Impacts
Motorists should expect traffic delays and possible temporary closures along the route. Please plan alternate travel routes and allow for extra travel time.

For everyone’s safety:
• Do not stop, slow, or park vehicles in the roadway to observe or follow the monks.
• Do not walk in the road or follow behind the monks, as this creates serious traffic hazards.
• Supporters are encouraged to remain in pedestrian-friendly areas and stay out of travel lanes.
• Please follow all instructions from law enforcement and event coordinators.
