#Rifters in #Greylight represent a part of the big class-struggle in society. Generally, they suffer
from lower social mobility due to exclusion and discrimination. They tend to be located at the lower end of the social spectrum.
At their core, they are a communal bunch - to Rifter and Human alike

Watt's Blindsight is better and less nihilistic, despite its reputation. It has the same viewpoint but the narrator is explicitly unreliable. It's also less gross for the same reason.
I would weirdly enjoy a lighter spin-off which was just the Rifters hanging out, doing undersea stuff.
#Rifters
It's a shame in a series with such good sci-fi ideas. Evolving digital life! Underwater vampires! Unreliable vat-grown organic computers! Implanted memories!
#Rifters
The implication is that the horrific things his sociopathic characters get up to (particularly in Behemoth) are 'natural.' Everyone else, the squishy humans, is fighting a losing battle.
That's reinforced by the language; the way they talk about sex and SA is grotesquely Darwinistic.
#Rifters
My problem is that Watts seems to see lack of emotion, brutality, and sociopathy, as survival traits. He consistently sees sociopaths as 'superior': freer, more evolved.
His non-sociopathic characters are always at a disadvantage.
This is a big part of what makes his books horror sci-fi.
#Rifters
Finally...there's the old ultra-violence.
I am not against books depicting graphic violence or abuse. Sometimes fiction needs to go to dark places.
I distrust it in this series, though.
#Rifters
The concept of damaged people being more in tune with a hostile environment, and healing from it, is the most compelling aspect of the series emotionally. It's a shame that it's such a minor focus of the series by page count.
#Rifters
There are only two Rifters (arguably three) who are developed characters. I don't think a single Rifter other than Lubin and Clarke has a speaking role in Behemoth: Seppuku.
#Rifters
Watts could skip the second book and jump straight to Behemoth with no change in the overall plot.
The series also gets weirdly far away from 'post-humans in a deadly undersea environment' concept. That's the first book and half of the third.
#Rifters
I finished the Rifters trilogy, which has amazing ideas and is way less than the sum of its parts.
#Rifters
I am reading the whole trilogy, they’re not exactly beach books- very heavy and depressing- but they have their ultra-grim charm.
Like if Michael Crichton was 30% more horror and way more into computer science.
#Rifters
Peter Watts’ Rifters trilogy and his depiction of AI is prescient, considering they date back to the 1990s.
Completely different mechanism- they are basically lab-grown brain cells- but he ‘gets’ instinctively that they would be weird, unreliable little shits.

#Rifters (5). All aboard the struggle train! America’s favorite time cops try not get murdered (again!) by a baby-mask wearing psychopath, then they make the a bunch of SWAT police shit their pants. Along the way, they learn a valuable lesson. Probably?
