Equal opportunities? Not a chance!

The Senate's new examination regulations for the Abitur for non-school pupils turn it into a lottery. Under the pretext of equalising the regular and non-school Abitur, non-school pupils are now severely disadvantaged.

Specifically, this concerns the oral examinations, which make up half of our eight Abitur examinations.

At a regular school, the teachers are the examiners. They know exactly what they have done with their pupils in class.

They know which international conflicts they have discussed in political science, or whether they have read ‘Nathan the Wise’ or ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’ in addition to ‘The Broken Jug’ and ‘The Visitation’.

We do not have this privilege. As so-called non-school pupils, we do not know the examiners, and they do not know us or our lessons. The only thing that ensures we receive a fair oral examination are focal points.

These are selectable, thematic focal points per subject and semester, which have now been cancelled by the Senate without notice.

This change to the examination regulations was made retroactively, is in some cases grossly negligent and contradictory, and makes passing our Abitur a matter of luck.

Most of us are taking our Abitur through adult education for good reason.

Whether we were unable to cope in mainstream schools due to neurodivergence, had to drop out of school due to experiences of discrimination, or simply had to start working or training as soon as possible due to financial hardship – we all have a right to education!

Four months …
