KURT COBAIN'S MARTIN D-18E GUITAR
Introduced in 1959, the model D-18E was an early attempt by the C. F. Martin Company to create an electrified version of one of their popular flat-top acoustic guitar designs. Unsuccessful upon release, only 302 D-18Es were ever manufactured, making this a very rare instrument. Bearing the serial number 166854, Kurt Cobain's guitar was the seventh to roll off the production line.
Some three decades later, this guitar turned up in a pawn shop in Alabama, where it was purchased by Lloyd Chiate, owner of the Voltage Guitars shop in Los Angeles, who sold it to Kurt Cobain.
Following Cobain's death in 1994, the guitar passed to his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain and then to Isaiah Silva, Frances Bean's ex-husband.
In June 2020, Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E was sold for a record price of $6,010,000 at Julien's Auctions to entrepreneur Peter Freedman. With this sale it became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction.

Royal College of Music Museum The Royal College of Music Museum contains over 15,000 musical treasures, including the earliest known guitar and most recognised portrait of Joseph Haydn.

#TIL that the #RoyalCollegeOfMusic in #London has a lovely little #museum of musical instruments. I discovered this purely by coincidence as I was looking at an old paper map to find my way through Kensington and it was marked as an attraction. https://www.rcm.ac.uk/museum/
