The German #RudolfRocker, born on #ThisDayInHistory in 1873, was one of my first introductions to #anarchism & #syndicalism. Expelled from SPD for #libertarian views, he later settled in the UK. Despite not being Jewish, he worked closely with Jewish anarchists at #ArbeterFraint.

#RudolfRocker always had a great influence on my economic thinking. @tomgoyens.bsky.social is, as always, digging up voices from the past we might not have heard, whose echoes reverberate also with current events.
“…participation in parliamentary politics has affected the Socialist labor movement like an insidious poison. It destroyed… the impulse to self-help, by inoculating people with the ruinous delusion that salvation always comes from above.” - #RudolfRocker, in #AnarchoSyndicalismTheoryAndPractice. Ⓐ
#AnarchoSyndicalist author #RudolfRocker was interned in the UK as an #EnemyAlien on #ThisDayInHistory in 1914. (He was German but worked in London for an #anarchist newspaper.) The reason was publication of his criticism of #WorldWarI in a piece written with #PyotrKropotkin.
Nellie Dick (1893-1995), born in Kiev, joined London's anarchist movement pre-WWI, associated with #RudolfRocker, met Sidney Street siege anarchists. With husband Jim, she very central to the U.S. Modern School movement after migrating there.

The unlikely leader: Rudolf Rocker and London's Jewish Anarchists. He led Jewish workers against sweatshops and built inter-communal solidarity, leaving an often overlooked legacy. #anarchism #antisemitism #rudolfrocker

'Anarcho-Syndicalism Theory and Practice' by Rudolf Rocker (1938) 6th edition published by AK Press 2004
"Direct action in both the economic & the political struggles of the time...is the only method which has been able to achieve anything at all in every decisive moment in history...As if the law had ever permitted a subject class to shake off its yoke."

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1958, the #anarchosyndicalist activist and writer #RudolfRocker died. From time in London with #Yiddish #anarchist newspaper Arbeter Fraint to agitation against Nazism in Germany to his last decades in the US, he never wavered in commitment to the future.
