Why Is Rugby Union So Posh?
Why Is Rugby Union So Posh? Why Is Rugby Posh? This week I was going by Hattie from The Rugby History Project to answer that very question. We dive into the origins of the sport, its roots in the English private school system, and the role colonialism played in the game's growth across the globe. We then ask the question if women's rugby is any different, before taking a look ahead to the Women's Six Nations. Will it be the Red Roses show again? Furthermore, what has the PWR done that has made both of us so mad? #rugby #history #england #class #socialhistory #podcast #sixnations #money #british Hattie's excellent article: https://therugbyhistoryproject.com/2025/11/03/why-is-rugby-union-posh/ follow me on twitter: https://x.com/HuwGriffinRugby Chapters 0:00 A Rugby Historian 2:55 Rugby Banned Books? 5:40 Its Own Worst Enemy 9:30 William Webb Ellis Never Happened 14:55 Why Is Rugby Posh? 26:25 The North South Divide Explained 32:00 Colonialism And Rugby 36:10 Is Women's Rugby Different? 43:00 Red Roses Thoughts 45:10 PWR Controversy 53:30 Wales Six Nations Preview

In Feb 1998, Wales, led by Rob Howley, beat Italy 23-20 at Stradey Park, Llanelli.

It was the 1st Wales match at the ground since 1893. Two years later Italy would become part of the 6N.

In 2006, a year after their Grand Slam, Ireland dismantled Wales 31-5 in Dublin.

Gavin Henson was booed by the home crowd (his 2005 book had accused Brian O'Driscoll of gouging).

Oddly, several Irish journalists claimed the boos were from Welsh fans. #IREvWAL #rugbyhistory

In Dublin in 1990, Ireland and Wales were both rooted in the second division of world rugby and both sides were fighting to avoid a whitewash (Wales's first).

Ireland won a poor game 14-8. #IREvWAL

It was Wales's 5th straight loss, which was then a record. #rugbyhistory

Wales, led by Mervyn Davies, won 34-9 (a huge score for the time at Test level) to win the Triple Crown. The Grand Slam would follow. #IREvWAL #rugbyhistory

One of my favourite rugby images.

Incorrectly labelled by Getty, so any insight into which team it may be, much appreciated. Published late 1920s it seems. #rugbyhistory

An image from the Library of Congress.

The only details are it's a group portrait of a Hong Kong rugby team from 1890.

One of the best rugby kits I've ever seen though. Have tried a translation app to read the text, but failed.

Anyone able to help? #rugbyhistory

Some St David's Day #rugbyhistory.

Wales 1st played on St David's day in 1890, drawing 3-3 with Ireland in Dublin. Charlie Thomas scored a try for Wales 5 mins from the end.

Nine players were arrested afterwards (8 were Irish) for 'exuberance of spirits'.

A little bit of a different #rugbyhistory for today.

This is me at my first #WALvSCO match. I had gone with my cousin (only two years older than me) and the drunk guy next to me insisted I go on the track for a picture.

You can see the Welsh players having their half-time break. #6N
