Exmouth & Budleigh - there are plenty of new roads to run in Exmouth & Budleigh so I did a bit of work on my heat map today. I’ll finish the Budleigh streets another day, but I’ve no intention of completing Exmouth.

Started off with a slightly different route between Standedge and Pule Hill that included this old stone bridge in SE0210.

Tunnel End in Marsden, this is where the Huddersfield Canal re-emerges from the longest/deepest canal tunnel in England. SE0312.

There are 3 reservoirs in this valley. This is the view across Yeoman Hey Reservoir looking at Ashway Moss, SE0204.

A bit further up the valley, a look over the spillway over Greenfield Reservoir. These two reservoirs were built around 1870. SE0205.

At the top of Greenfield Reservoir looking up at ‘The Trinacle’. These rocks are a favourite Insta photo spot now, and becoming the bane of the Mountain Rescue as the walk up to them is not as easy as many seem to think. SE0305.

Climbing up Alphin felt a little like Everest today. Such lovely conditions brought a queue of people out. SD9902.

First new square of the day was heading down the, colloquially named, Cotton Famine Road (which isn’t what it sounds like apparently). Ben looking delighted at the conditions, there was one set of tracks to follow, other than those from the Mountain Hares.

SE0406 is more of the same. I’ve ran this ‘road’ in all conditions, I think today was the most exhausting of all.

SE0506 saw our route change, we’d taken over 2 hours to do 7km wading through the snow. This is the start of the ‘slabs’ – a well trodden path across the moors that is made up of huge stone slabs. We couldn’t find the slabs anywhere beneath the snow!

SE0005 sees one of my favourite routes out of the village on this lovely little footpath.

SE0004 has one of my most pictured spots, this little rise opens up and gives a lovely view down the valley towards Dovestones, I have pictures here in every season.

The view from the top of Alphin Pike looking over Dovestone Reservoir is the best spot in all of SE0104. I’m often up here looking down on the hoards at Dovies wondering why everyone swarms down there when the surrounding hills are usually so empty.

Had to take a day off running yesterday, so spent some of my time making a database to track my #RunningInSquares challenge! I've been out in the snow for some close by peaks... photos and blog later, fun wading through the drifts on the top

Time for some (still slightly sore) #runninginsquares fun in the snow. With more appropriate footwear this time!

SD9807 takes in the Saddleworth village of Delph. I almost always take the footpath along the river, rather than the high street. It’s quiet and another nice bit of industrial heritage.

SD9808 includes a little hidden hill in the middle of the village, a little field hopping got me to what I hoped would be close enough to the top of the hill to claim the peak of Delph Hill, but it didn’t register. The flock of sheep thought I was there to feed them so I didn’t venture further. Will have to come back another day when there isn’t livestock in the field.

SD9707 took in another footpath that was new to me. This one links several other routes I often do so is nice to know. The lower end in the valley of Delph was nice, although it petered out as it met Grains Road.

Beautiful view down from Grains Road in SD9708 over the valley. The Tour de Britain often comes up here as an official climb.

First up was my home square of SD9905. The local playing fields were looking picturesque in the morning sun & frost.

SD9804. The valleys around us were the heart of the Industrial Revolution, canals and railways (and tunnels under them) criss cross the area and provide loads of relatively flat running in an otherwise hilly area.

SD9805 Wharmton Hill 348m. The first of many peaks, Wharmton Hill overlooks the surrounding villages, the Saddleworth Transmitter on top broadcasts Freeview TV and BBC radio. Its proximity probably explains why my TV is still just about working despite the Christmas winds leaving my aerial hanging off!

A beautiful January day to start ticking off squares & peaks. Glad I didn't go out yesterday with fairly significant flooding in the local area.
