Detroit is launching one of the largest guaranteed cash programs for expectant mothers in the country. Under Michigan State University’s Rx Kids initiative, every pregnant person in Detroit will receive $1,500 during pregnancy, followed by $500 per month for at least six months after birth. There are no income requirements, and families can use the money for essentials like rent, utilities, food, diapers, formula, transportation, and medical care. The expansion was announced Monday by Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield — the city’s first woman mayor — alongside program founder Mona Hanna-Attisha, the pediatrician who helped expose the Flint water crisis. The announcement featured Detroit mothers and their children, underscoring who the program is designed to support.
