Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Cardiovascular Implications with Elaine Costa, MD In this SCCR Science Series session, Elaine Costa, MD, a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery (OHNS) provides an overview of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Here, she covers how to: 1. Identify and describe the clinical features and diagnostic criteria of OSA 2. Understand the various diagnostic tools and methods used to diagnose OSA 3. Recognize the pathophysiology and key risk factors associated with OSA 4. Assess the long-term cardiovascular risks associated with OSA 5. Evaluate the range of treatment options available for OSA About the Instructor: Dr. Elaine Costa is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology. Her current research focuses on Obstructive Sleep Apnea, from diagnosis to evaluation of clinical outcomes post-surgical intervention. She earned her medical doctorate at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and holds a master's degree in sciences from Universidade Estadual de Campinas, where she also specialized in otolaryngology. Dr. Costa has foundational research experience from Brunel University London and has honed her clinical research, project management, analytical skills and leadership in academia during her trainings over the last 12 years.

Medical Terminology and Common Medical Acronyms with Andrew Moore, MD Clinical Scholar in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford, Andrew Moore, MD, provides a foundation in medical terminology and common medical acronyms. In this session, he discusses the typical components of medical terms as well as the important anatomic landmarks, which in combination can be used to interpret the majority of medical terminology. Topics include: • Key roots, prefixes, and suffixes for medical terms • Important anatomic terminology • Importance of acronyms in medical practice • When the use of medical acronyms is appropriate and when it should be avoided • Common medical acronyms, abbreviations, and colloquialisms • Resources to improve health literacy Andrew Moore, MD, is a pulmonary and critical care medicine instructor at Stanford. He grew up in Virginia and completed his Bachelor’s in Neuroscience at the College of William and Mary followed by his MD at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and his residency and chief residency here at Stanford. He works clinically in the intensive care unit (ICU) and his research focuses on the use of bioinformatics to develop better diagnostic and prognostic tools in the ICU.
