Districts across B.C. cutting millions from budgets, again The province is projecting to spend $25 million less in core funding for schools. Critics say the province isn't keeping up with inflationary costs.

Districts across B.C. cutting millions from budgets, again cheknews.ca/districts-ac... They better not cut anything here in Kamloops Thompson & they should restore what we've lost last yr. Especially because this school board is not creative or collaborative in terms of serving our students. #SD73

The school board hired a guy who keeps repeating that in Ontario he used to do a land acknowledgement because he had to. That's about the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. But now that he's here in Secwepemc’ulew, he means it, apparently! #Kamloops #Thompson #SD73

Thank you, Macarena, for speaking with us parents. The City clearly does not make room for us at the table. They are happy to list the school district as a partner, perhaps because the district does not engage on this issue. thewrennews.ca/city-staff-e... #Kamloops #SD73 #visionzero

SD73 considers expansion of before and after school child care programs The Kamloops-Thompson school district says it's made major moves to add before and after school child care programs to Kamloops schools, and its eyeing five more locations to meet community need.

Folks, why would we need a classroom the same time as after school childcare? 🚩 www.castanetkamloops.net/news/Kamloop... “Because we can’t be in a situation where we’re trying to put in a before and after school care space only to realize we need a classroom two years down the road,” #Kamloops #SD73

I know another SD73 property that could use something on it. I doubt the old primary school in Chase can be renovated back to usability, but it seems a shame the land is just sitting unused for years.

Schools Board meeting on right now. Talked about Westmount elementary. Logistics of moving the kids, variety of questions. Not one trustee asked about mental health supports for students. They know that someone deliberately set a fire to their school! That can be upsetting! #Kamloops #Thompson #SD73

Our school board keeps repeating that they are in charge of governance. That should include having an emergency response policy in place that is student centred? 🤷🏻‍♀️. If your governance centres around students, that is. Maybe they see themselves as employers. #Kamloops #Thompson #SD73

You know what else is stressful to students? Lack of supports in our schools when they learn differently from the *mainstream student. It then shows up as "poor academic outcomes" which is affecting their confidence and self worth. That's on you, BCNDP. #Kamloops #Thompson #SD73

Chair Grieve summarized the Ministry’s response as non-committal, noting that
SkillsTrades BC plans to speak with Thompson Rivers University (TRU) about
reassessing their current training plan and possibly delivering the program using
existing base funding.
Trustees expressed concern that the Ministry was deferring responsibility to TRU
and emphasized the importance of highlighting the strong local fundraising efforts
that have already taken place.
Trustee Sim noted this local commitment demonstrates proactive community
support and positions the District as an active stakeholder rather than simply
requesting funds.
It was agreed that Superintendent Nixon would follow up directly with TRU to
clarify the reduced funding needed due to community contributions and to
advocate for the continuation of the program.
The main implication is that SD73 will take a more direct role in communicating
with TRU and reinforcing the importance of sustaining the program through
collaborative funding, particularly given its provincial relevance and strong
industry support.

Board of Education - In-Camera, June 30, 2025

The key details included District data on suspensions, alternate education
arrangements, and decision-making processes related to exclusions. The 3-year
data submission revealed significant improvements in data tracking and affirmed
that the District does not have a practice of formally asking students to stay
home. The report also prompted discussion around public perceptions, potential
pushback, and the need to explore broader conversations around the
effectiveness and realities of inclusive education.
