#SFFtalk I think I want to be able to dive into emotions even deeper. I have The Emotion Thesaurus, which is a very helpful book, but sometimes I still feel like I don't have enough variety of ways of showing emotions, or just don't go deep enough, so I want to work on that more.

From stellar spy (Nov 2025)

Finn doesn’t just smell like the ocean. Finn *is* the ocean. He’s the sighing of the sea, the kiss of waves breaking on the shore, the whisper on the cat’s-paw wind, the surf lapping gently, tenderly.

And I’m letting him go.

I keep missing #sfftalk but I'm so with you on the Vorkosigan series! One of my books is inspired by it. It's my absolute favorite

I do not have any references to other works -yet-, but I have quite a few planned: there will be a Hades Calculus joke in book 1 for those with the eyes to see, a homage to Basilisk station, and a beautiful woman named Gráinne who tries to murder Maxima, to name a few

#SFFTalk Question 2: References to other media.

TETK is full of these, but here are some from So Sing the Barrows and The Wings of Ashtaroth, for a change of pace! If you catch the references you win . . . nothing (but I will think you are cool).

Hi everyone, I'm Tired.

Dad jokes aside, I'm Cal.

I write SFFH books that rarely fit into a neat subcategory. High fantasy westerns, Cosmic horror fantasy, a book that was supposed to be cozy but is now becoming something else...unhinged.

#SFFtalk since people seemed to love Berrick earlier today...

"Velta scooped Berrick up and tried to put him into one of the broom’s saddlebags, only to discover that he had a very cat-like aversion to being made to do *anything*."

Been thinking about radioarchaeology lately. A sci-fi concept where intrepid archaeologists travel FTL to intercept the original broadcasts of lost media and preserve them. I think I first read about it in a Jack McDevitt story but I don't remember its name.

Question 1: Hype up fellow SFF author!

Oh my $DEITY I fangrrl @lydamorehouse.bsky.social SO HARD! She has a wonderful cyberpunk series, and her most recent book, Welcome to Boy.net, has an AMAZING trans heroine!

If vampires are more your thing, her alter ego Tate Hallaway has you covered.

Question 4: What does "good worldbuilding" mean to you?

It's got to be subtle, believable, and self-consistent. It has to be so clear that the reader feels it in their bones and if the author violates it the readers can call them on it.

But the author should never violate it.

@katherinevillyard.com wrote a great Jewish vampire novel y'all need to check out!

Question 3: What would SFF & Fantasy look like in your fictonal world(s)?

My fictional world is It's just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right from our own universe. So there are references to a lot of SFF works sprinkled throughout.

Stephen King is quoted directly.

Question 2: Share a book that's influenced your own work!

All of my #ScienceFiction work is inspired by Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain. His pragmatic, journalistic style detailing scientific topics makes all of his books more believable and terrifying.

I always aim for that.

Question 1: Hype up a fellow SFF author!

@aptshadow.bsky.social writes amazing #ScienceFiction. His Children of Time series blew open the doors of my mind over and over again. Sentient spiders, octupi, and paramecium and computers made of ants!

Also Murderbot by @marthawells.com. Yikes!

"Good worldbuilding" to me means that there has been a lot of thought and effort put into it, the cultures, the people, the history (I think history is my favorite part of worldbuilding, tbh)... if I can't get a sense of what the world looks & feels like, I have trouble finishing the book.

I feel like SFF as a genre on Asloria would be our modern day 😂 no magic, no mythical creatures, just everyday people doing their best to live their lives.

It's hard to pick just 1 book, but I think I'd go with "Spellfire" by Ed Greenwood, father of The Forgotten Realms. "Spellfire" was not only one of the first books that got me into fantasy, it was also where the first spark for Braelyn (my MC) came from.

I've bragged about her before, but my pal @akfantasywriter.bsky.social is a wonderful writer! She helps run the @worldsmyths.bsky.social's Discord (where I've gotten some great help on my own works), and her debut novella just came out on the 12th!

Also, her cat Merlin is the best 😂

Question 3: What would SFF look like in your fictional world(s)?

Sci-fi/fantasy in my fantasy world would probably look like sci-fi does to us: taking what's possible and exaggerating it. Flashier magic that changes more, more outlandish monsters, gods taking a more active hand in things.

#SFFtalk Q2:

I think I'm more inspired by what I don't see tbh...

Its hard to find crime thrillers with female protagonists.

You also see very little rep of female hackers, particularly ones who arent hyper beautified.

If you do know of any, send them my way 🤣

Question 2: Share a book that's influenced your own work!

The Raven Ring, by Patricia C. Wrede, is great on its own, but its focus on cultural differences among characters who are all competent in their own ways inspired the depth of personal details and differences in my own characters.

I'm Fox, and I mostly write character-focused fantasy. I love digging deep into my characters' psychology (without turning it into trauma porn) and the social issues that affect their worlds. I haven't published anything yet, and that's okay with me for now.

Oh dear heavens, which book, which book?
Early influences were Eddison's A Fish Dinner in Memison. But also C.J. Cherryh's Cyteen. Add in John Steinbeck, Willa Cather, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

#SFFtalk. I'm Joyce, writer, horsewoman, and retired special ed teacher.
My current WIP is a high fantasy about what happens AFTER the Big Bad Emperor gets deposed. Westernish settings with a light dose of magic-based steampunk.
