Thanks to the @SFU_PDA team for organizing another great #SFUPostdocResearch day!
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny : Speaking about the importance of twitter in science collaboration and publicizing the results of science!
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny : Itβs ok for experts to speak out on issues you know things about! Get involved in local issues in your area of expertise
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny : Canβt get into the field? Meta-analysis of othersβ published research is an important contribution, especially with conservation relevant research!
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny is now talking about supervising students and being senior author not lead author on a paper. She is senior author on my most-cited paper!
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny : Grad school can be stressful, find a community of friends who can support each other!
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny : Spent 800 hours underwater in the tropics watching red lip blenny mate choice behavior during grad school- but original project was in the Arctic! Itβs ok to change your research focus to one thatβs a better fit for you.
#SFUPostdocResearch @redlipblenny :
A dude at #SFUPostdocResearch gave a talk in Japan, hopped in cab to the airport, flew here, took a cab from airport to campus, and gave a talk here.
Hereβs @Ibycter at #SFUPostdocResearch , talking about how the airport affects insects and birds that feed on them. Iβm up after Sean!
Ready for my #SFUpostdocresearch talk!
Dr. Cheung at #SFUPostdocResearch day is a computer scientist who looks at how computer interfaces are portrayed in science fiction! Neat!
At #SFUPostdocResearch ,
@ValdesBulmaro has us close our eyes and perform a task from memory, then explains how heβs training robots to do that. Cool!
#SFUpostdocresearch Dr. Heather More studies nerve conductivity in animals ranging in size from a tiny shrew to a ginormous elephant- some, but not all, nerve signals take longer to move through a bigger animal. Takes 20x as long in elephants for some nerve signals!
.@Viriliz_12 at #SFUPostdocResearch says her favorite thing about Boron is that it burns green. Also apparently millennials eat a lot of it, because itβs in avocados.
Oh hey Iβm in a photo on the @SFU_PDA welcome slides #SFUPostdocResearch
Dean Derksen says of SFU postdocs βthe University would be a less interesting place without youβ #SFUPostdocResearch
I am the only person in this room wearing a tie, including a Dean. π #SFUPostdocResearch
Ready for #SFUPostdocResearch day!
Today is PostDoc research day at @sfu @SFU_Science @SFUResearch , and Iβm honored to have been selected as one of two Postdocs from my department @SFUBioSci to give a spotlight talk about my research! Follow #SFUPostdocResearch for highlights from today!
Hello friends! Between #ODotCOmm18 , #NEPacSharks18, #SFUPostdocResearch day, and ocean chess, I've been clogging your feed (and my own head) more than usual the last week and a half. I'm going to take a quick twitter break. Back this weekend. Be excellent to each other.
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : First Nations traditional resource management could help inform modern management. The Holocene can inform the anthropocene!
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : Modern experimental tests of First Nations clam gardens show 2-4x more clams than unmodified beaches, and clams also grow 2x faster inside them.
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : First Nations here used to heavily modify the coastline to promote clam growth: βclam gardensβ.
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : When otters are present, mussels are noticeably smaller. Can trace this through time by measuring mussel shells in archaeological sites, which confirms that otters were historically removed from coastal sites
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : First Nations communities used to hunt otters so they wouldnβt eat all the urchins- otter bones found in archaeological sites along with mussel and clam shells.
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : The return/reintroduction of otters has expanded the tropic diversity of coastal food webs, affecting every level of the food web
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : Sea star wasting disease rapidly and significantly disrupts the famous otter-urchin-kelp forest dynamic.
#SFUpostdocresearch @AnneKSalomon : Interdisciplinary research is the building block to finding solutions to a variety of scientific and environmental problems
And #SFUpostdocresearch day ends with a keynote address by @AnneKSalomon , a great Interdisciplinary scientist and one of my favorite science storytellers!
