Continuing my recap of #SIGCSE2025 - today two more sessions. One by @neilcbrown.bsky.social showing off a nice new Python programming environment and one by Joseph Maxwell sharing a program he built that gives students a chance to learn real SWE skills.

Here's a brief overview 🧵👇
It was my great privilege to be the Senior Symposium Co-Chair for the 2025 ACM SIGCSE Technical Symposium. Organizing a conference of 1700+ attendees was an opportunity to work with a great team of volunteers dedicated to advancing CS education. #sigcse #sigcse2025
I've written up some notes on the #SIGCSE2025 discussion about privacy and accessibility legislation for educational software in a follow-up blog post: academiccomputing.wordpress.com/2025/03/02/f...

For this year’s selections, we are looking at ways to empower our students to be positive change agents in our communities. #SIGCSE2025 #SIGCSEReads
I'm in Pittsburgh for the SIGCSE Computer Science Education conference. Loving the city! #SIGCSE #SIGCSE2025 sigcse2025.sigcse.org
Dr. Michael Miljanovic presenting at SIGCSE 2025.
Today Dr. Michael Miljanovic presented our latest paper at #SIGCSE2025. The paper titled “How Effective and Efficient Are Student-Written Software Tests?”, is co-authored by Amanda Showler, Michael Miljanovic, and Jeremy Bradbury. 📄: www.sqrlab.ca/publications...
Jean Ryoo holding a copy of the graphic novel "Power On." A banner with the MIT Press logo is depicted behind her.
We had a wonderful visit with Jean Ryoo at #SIGCSE2025! You can find her graphic novel "Power On!" and more at booth 111 during the conference. And keep an eye out; our Spanish translation of "Power On!" publishes later this spring: mitpress.mit.edu/978026255168...

In a plenary panel at #SIGCSE2025 on the future of CS education, @mapq.bsky.social suggested that maybe Operating Systems doesn’t need to be a core required CS course… but maybe Human-Computer Interaction should be. I agree, what do you all think?
A bar chart with X axis from 1983 to 2022 “included papers by publication years” which shows 48% in the last five years
If you’re interested in an overview of what’s happening in computing ethics education, check out this paper that Noelle just presented at #SIGCSE2025! dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... One thing we found in this systematic literature review was that… there’s a lot more of it lately. :)
Great paper on "Experience Report: Using Narratives to Teach Responsible Computing in the U.S. and Nigeria" by Omowumi Ogunyemi reports on integrating computing ethics into courses at a US liberal arts college and a Nigerian technology university #SIGCSE2025
This evening at #SIGCSE2025 I’m helping to run a session on “Toolkits and Strategies for Incorporating Ethics into Project and Capstone Classes”! Or if you’re not here and are interested in this topic, check out this paper: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...
haha yes if you’re at #sigcse2025 and wondering why I’m not in the ethics session it’s because I’m in the other ethics session which features one paper I’m a co-author on and another paper from a PhD student whose committee I am on :)
Again, love the increase in ethics conent at #SIGCSE2025, but frustrating that the "Ethics, Power, and Persistence" session is scheduled at the same time as the "Ethics" session.
How do we build human-centered Al? • Recruit diverse and top-notch scientists interested in ethical design • Develop policy and funding for human-centered Al - Devise and disseminate new mental models - Fund and incentivize creation of datasets/benchmarks • Study how data science and Al impact people AND design algorithms that take this into account - "To evaluate the risks or benefits of an algorithm, we need to study its impact in people's lives." - J. Nathan Matias • Develop best practices • Teach the next generation of engineers
@ceciliaaragon.bsky.social closes her #SIGCSE2025 keynote with a set of directives on building "human-centered AI" -- all of which are key areas of focus for us at @mudataethics.bsky.social as we train the next generation of computer and data professionals grounded in social & ethical values.

I'm at #SIGCSE2025 and the opening keynote by @ceciliaaragon.bsky.social reminds us of "Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine" (published in 1958) and what it can help us understand about AI and education & learning today.
At #SIGCSE2025, and queer or questioning? Find us in 327 tonight at 630 before the reception and we will plot, play, and rest.
