One more thought on the show, Sabrina Carpenter did a great job in the skits, especially her croaking out the "bridesmaids" karaoke song. I can see her coming back and doing double duty as host and music host.

The bookending of the #SNL50th with songs about trying to get home seemed appropriately melancholy. When I heard the beginning of "Golden Slumbers" in the movie "Sing" over the holidays in 2016, it brought me to tears because I knew we'd lost the way home, and we're even more lost now.

I wasn't able to watch the #SNL50th last night but have been streaming it today. I LOST it when I realized Jane Curtain and Lorraine Newman were holding up Gilda Radner's photo at the end. Gilda was a fave of mine. I so appreciated this tribute to a legend.😭😭😭

Though #SNL50th was a lil disappointing there were some highlights. The #cancelculture segment w #Tomhanks was a fun acknowledgement of #societalprogress made without hand wringing or too earnest #meaculpa s. Solid #montage w #sketches & hosts that won't be back. The 1970s was a time of racial tension. There was forced integration but little real inclusion and there were words used to attack each other. My teen peers (mostly white) started to use “Dead honky” as a shorthand for “check your bigotry” see next

In 1976 Barbara Walters became the first female national news anchor. There wouldn’t be another one for 15 years. It was clear that the male anchor was uncomfortable with his co-anchor gender Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain allowed us to laugh at the absurdity.

Maybe because I’ve lived through fifty years of SNL, I think many of the things included have aged very well especially when you consider the cultural relevance and significance of the joke or skit to what was happening historically at the time. We have to be able to laugh at the times.
