From Sustainable to Regenerative Farming Shift Sustainability has become something of a buzzword over the years. From the clothes we wear and the energy that powers our homes to the way we live our lives, the idea of sustainable production and consumption has become commonplace. That is also true about the way we grow and consume food. Recently, however, another term has come to the fore: regenerative agriculture. It sounds attractive, somehow better than sustainable, but what does it really mean? Regenerative agriculture began as a grassroots approach to farming led by farmers . It has been described in many different ways, but a common thread is a set of values . People might be drawn to the word "regenerative" because it evokes a sense of improvement rather than just maintaining the status quo - for example, efforts to rebuild a system and our values. That last bit - rebuilding not only the system but our values - is really important. Values often include care for the environment, a responsibility to nature and cultivation of good food. Just like there are many ways to grow food, there are also many languages, voices and histories that express the ways that food can be cultivated in alignment with...

Ribbon cut on Weber State Sustainability Home in Ogden On Tuesday, the Weber State University Sustainability Practices and Research Center cut the ribbon on its Sustainability House in central Ogden, and the public will soon have its opportunities to see it. Hannah Rogers, energy navigator at the Weber State Sustainability Home, told the Standard-Examiner that the house comes with several energy-saving items. “It’s net-zero carbon — the whole house produces more electricity than we draw from the grid,” she said. “It’s also fully electrified. There’s no gas line that goes to the house, there’s no gas appliances, we have a heat-pump, rooftop solar, we’re about to get a battery … and the van that we use is also a hybrid vehicle, and we charge it every night.” She said utility bills for the house usually run around $30 per month in total. Rob Nielsen, Standard-Examiner Bonnie Christiansen, sustainability programs and engagement manager at the Weber State Sustainability Home, told the Standard-Examiner that the house is a way of connecting the community with WSU’s work on sustainability. “At Weber State, we really work on sustainability in a very economically and environmentally sustainable way,” she said. “We wanted to be able to share what we were doing on campus with residents...

Request for Proposals: Measuring Sustainability for Boulder County Climate Office The Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI) is collaborating with Boulder County to support a pilot project. The goal is to develop and test a measurement approach that can be applied across different kinds of climate and sustainability-focused Boulder County projects, with ideal applications across natural climate solutions projects. Proposals are due on April 17, 2026, with up to $100K available to support one team. Example Boulder County projects might include stream and riparian restoration, urban tree canopy expansion, biochar, agricultural soil health and green infrastructure. Statement of Challenge from the Boulder County Office of Sustainability, Climate Action & Resilience Boulder County currently allocates 1.1 million dollars from the Sustainability Tax to natural climate solutions. These dollars are broadly spent on work in forestry, grasslands, agriculture, and urban landscapes. More specifically, the natural climate solutions actions include stream and riparian restoration, liability biomass utilization (biochar), agricultural soil health conservation practices, urban tree canopy expansion, and the transformation of impervious surfaces into green infrastructure in urban landscapes. The current programs' impact since 2020 is estimated at less than 5% of Boulder County's total land area. Current measurements and benefits of these programs are presented qualitatively and largely rely on models rather than monitoring...

New edie Extra podcast: What is the role of the sustainability department in 2026? The latest edie Extra podcast is now streaming, featuring a new and exclusive live panel debate on the role of the sustainability department in 2026. This discussion was recorded live at the edie 26 conference in central London in March 2026, where more than 950 ESG professionals and business leaders convened for two days of inspiration and co-creation. Climate School’s Celli Lloyd and Hill Dickinson’s climate lead Dr Ariel Edesses are in conversation for this episode, which is chaired by edie’s content editor Sarah George. The duo explore how the role of the sustainability professional is changing due to ever-increasing reporting and due diligence requirements, a more dynamic risk landscape, and the pressing need to make good on 2025 and 2030 environmental goals without greenwashing. Lloyd says: “I feel like the sustainability transition is similar to the IT transition that happened 30 years ago… we still have a chief of IT today, even though everyone has integrated IT into their general role. “As we’re setting goals around net-zero, biodiversity, water or whatever it might be, we still need someone at the top who is thinking strategically about what the direction of travel is going to be. They’re not necessarily going...

Sustainability accounting can be difficult, but can differentiate Discussions around the sustainability of public cloud platforms have become increasingly prominent in recent years. Hyperscale providers now publish a growing volume of data, dashboards and metrics designed to demonstrate the environmental efficiency of their infrastructure. But, for enterprise IT leaders tasked with making informed decisions, distinguishing between meaningful insight and marketing narrative remains a persistent challenge. At a surface level, cloud platforms present a compelling sustainability proposition. The ability to consolidate workloads into highly optimised, large-scale data centres offers clear advantages in energy efficiency compared to fragmented on-premise environments. Hyperscalers also benefit from access to renewable energy at scale, alongside the engineering expertise required to continually improve power usage effectiveness (PUE) across their estates. The difficulty arises when organisations attempt to translate these high-level efficiencies into a clear understanding of their own environmental impact. In many cases, the data made available by cloud providers is not directly comparable. Methodologies differ, reporting boundaries vary and the level of granularity provided is often insufficient for organisations that want to align cloud usage with their own carbon reporting frameworks. As a result, enterprise IT leaders are frequently left relying on indicative estimates rather than verifiable, auditable data. This lack of transparency creates...
