The military government responded by declaring a state of emergency and violently suppressing the uprising. The documentary contributes to a historical reappraisal of state violence and lends weight to the ongoing demands for an official apology and redress from the state. The screening of the film in Germany establishes a historical connection to the South Korean miners who were fighting for their human and residency rights in the Ruhr region at the same time. Their success in Germany was directly linked to the bloody events in Korea. Inuk Hwang is director of the Jeongseon Regional Society Research Institute and the spokesperson in the film. Die Militärregierung reagierte mit der Ausrufung des Ausnahmezustands und der gewaltsamen Unterdrückung des Aufstands. Der Dokumentarfilm trägt zu einer historischen Aufarbeitung staatlicher Gewalt bei und verleiht den anhaltenden Forderungen nach einer offiziellen Entschuldigung und Wiedergutmachung durch den Staat Gewicht. Die Vorführung des Films in Deutschland stellt eine historische Verbindung zu den südkoreanischen Bergarbeitern her, die zur gleichen Zeit im Ruhrgebiet für ihre Menschen- und Aufenthaltsrechte kämpften. Ihr Erfolg in Deutschland stand in direktem Zusammenhang mit den blutigen Ereignissen in Korea. Inuk Hwang ist Direktor des Instituts zur Erforschung der regionalen Gesellschaft Jeongseon und der Sprecher im Film. You Jae Lee ist Professor für Koreanistik an der Universität Tübingen.
