Pre-Islamic Arabic and Greek! The #Safaitic abecedary we posted earlier this week was far more interesting than originally thought. A close re-reading of the stone revealed the entire Safaitic alphabet in the Greek letter order!

#Incredible ! There is good evidence that Greek literacy was relatively widespread among the ancient Arabs east of Ḥawrān. Here, our #Safaitic author partially writes out the Safaitic letters in the Greek order, omitting vowels!

Arabs, Romans, and Persians, oh my!
Some 2k years ago an Arab commander named Wahballāh son of Ẓann-ʾEl led a troop with an Arab soldier called "Scorpion," a Roman called "Big Mark," and Persian called "held by Ahura Mazda." Here are their inscriptions in #Greek and #Safaitic

We saw ancient Arabs writing in Greek but what about Romans using Arabic? Perhaps an example of this is a #newly uploaded #Safaitic text to #OCIANA by a man named 𝒈𝒚𝒔̣ (Gaius) 𝒅̱ ʾ𝒍 𝒓𝒎 'of the people of Rome'.

#New on #OCIANA: A #Safaitic invocation calling upon a new deity - ḏgn /ḏū genn/ 'master of the Jinn'! This along with other circumstantial evidence suggests that a belief in ginn spirits was current among the Safaitic writers some 2k ago.

A fascinating new #Safaitic inscription edited and uploaded to #OCIANA. Our man here expresses his fear of the Romans, that his fear was unceasing (lam ya’lu), and calls upon Allāt for security.

ḥ-b-b

The common Semitic root which conveys the meaning of love. In Hebrew this root was largely supplanted by the root אהב (ʔhb), but it still exists in 1 verse of the Tanakh and occasionally in the Talmud, and also probably in the name of the brother-in-law of Moses, although he was a Midianite. Modern Hebrew has also borrowed the word حبيبي (ḥabeebi) meaning “my beloved” from Arabic as חביבי with the enclitic pronoun retained.
