The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil Conflict, was a high-altitude armed conflict fought between India and Pakistan in 1999 in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, along the Line of Control (LoC). Background and Causes The conflict is rooted in the long-standing territorial disputes over Kashmir. Pakistan triggered the war by infiltrating its troops, disguised as militants, into strategic positions on the Indian side of the LoC in the winter of 1998-1999. Pakistan's "Operation Badr" aimed to cut off the link between Kashmir and Ladakh via the Srinagar-Leh highway, force negotiations on Kashmir, and internationalize the issue. Although Pakistan initially denied involvement, evidence confirmed the presence of its regular army and paramilitary forces. Indian Response: Operation Vijay India launched "Operation Vijay," involving 200,000 troops and the Indian Air Force's "Operation Safed Sagar," to remove the infiltrators. Fighting at high altitudes with challenging terrain and weather conditions presented significant difficulties. Despite this, the Indian Army, supported by artillery, recaptured key peaks like Tololing, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875. International Reaction and Resolution The international community, led by the United States, condemned Pakistan and urged withdrawal. Facing pressure, Pakistan withdrew its troops. Fighting ended on July 26, 1999, with India regaining control. This day is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas. Impact and Consequences The war damaged India-Pakistan trust and halted peace efforts. It led to Indian defense reforms and military modernization. For Pakistan, it resulted in a military defeat and political upheaval. The conflict highlighted the risks between the nuclear-armed nations and strengthened US-India relations. The Kargil War remains a significant event in the complex India-Pakistan relationship.
