A flier announcing the lecture supported by Central Asian Studies at Oxford. Entitled "The Christians of medieval Samarqand" by Benjamin Sharkey, it will take place on Friday, January 31, in the Levett Room at Wolfson College, Linton Road, Oxford. The abstract reads as follows: "This work in progress presentation will outline the aims, arguments, and evidence of the final Chapter of Benjamin's DPhil Thesis. The chapter examines comprehensively the surviving sources related to the Christian community of Samarqand, present from at least the 7th through the early 15th [century]. The Christian community of Samarqand was one of Central Asia's largest and best documented, yet it has so far received almost no scholarly attention. As well as evidencing a continued presence in the city, these sources also offer the clearest view of how Christians and Muslims interacted in Central Asia. Perhaps most significantly they can throw new light on the process of Mongol Chaghatai Islamisation."
