#AssasinationClassroom tricks you into thinking it's a fun high school story with a squid gimmick. It actually criticizes performance society, with Koro-sensei as a teacher who aims to foster the morals and personal talents of each student. Get tissues for the end.

12 people get the power of clairvoyance through #MiraiNikki and get thrown into a battle royal to decide the next god. I like the idea of making it a roman pantheon-like in Modern Japan, with all the cruelties and psychologic defects that come with it.

One of my favs.

The #Eyeshield21 anime feels like it's out of the same era as Kenichi but strikes a better balance between humour and seriousness. Also filler and limited animation make the anime less enjoyable than other sports anime.

I heard the manga is a lot better in that regard.

I liked #Kenichi and the story about improving oneself, learning lessons where you find them and how violence always leads to more violence. But the pacing is really weird. It jumps from serious to silly, from lewd and fatal injuries to childish humour.

#Sayoasa is a high-fantasy film about the motherly love of nearly-immortal #Maquia who lost her home to war and finds her raison d'etre in raising an adopted mortal.
The beautifully animated tale surprises with poignant real-world themes of identity, purpose & time.

#KaijuNoKodomo is very atmospheric and artistic, an experience probably best enjoyed in cinemas. The plot is overly mysterious and allegoric, which I probably would have enjoyed more if I didn't stream it on a bad service. Only realized by the end eyes have animated mirror images.

#AkudamaDrive has strong characters, great visuals and the plot evolves every episode into a different structure. Unfortunately the unnecessary and forced exposition kills the pace and confuses more than it explains. Shark and Rabbit ruined it for me.

#KurokosBasketball Last Game has great action scenes and is nice if you want to see how the Generation of Wonders would work as a team. Unfortunately the antagonist team lacked charisma and the plot threads that had potential didn't have enough time to develop imo

I liked how each player in #KurokosBasketball had one "gimmick", but I didn't like how it felt that only the "Generation of Miracles" mattered most of the time, since other teams were interesting too. Imo Kurokos motivation should have been revealed earlier and hook the story from there

#Haikyuu is such a well-made shonen and sports anime that I'd probably have started doing more Volleyball if I was still in school. The story of a short enthusiast who just wants to hit the ball and a determined rival-becoming-friend hooked me right in.

A team of very different Teens has to work together to travel back home. This gets very well communicated through the strong image of a human chain in space in the very first episode. Every ep is exciting, though some traction gets lost to politics.

The #CrayonShinchan: "Crash! Scribble Kingdom and Almost Four Heroes" movie was quite a suprirse hit for me. It sounds like a playgorund fantasy adventure that starts as silly antics, but gives each off the "jokes" meaning in the end by celebrating freedom of expression and creativity

#ExpelledFromParadise raises interesting questions about artificial intelligence and humanity through the lense of a soldier that only knew life from a metaverse (long before it was called that).

It's tough to recommend due to fanservice that feels forced, especially the "lolification"

#Aura: Koga Maryuin's Last War isn't without flaws, but a great example how film can be transformed through it's medium. Due to anime's nature, you never know if it transforms into a fantasy movie halfway through. Such a transition would be much harder in live-action

#Starblazers2199 is the remake to an already great story about Voyagers travelling into the unknown to save humanity from extinction. It adds new story, more depth and a high overall production value. Some episodes feel like stand-alone shorts.

#Toradora is simply one of the best romcom anime I've ever seen. It has lots of lighthearted comedy, but each of its charactes has also deep layers that lead to drama in the climax. They all feel so real in the end that you don't want to let them go.

I underestimated #ChildrenWhoChaseLostVoices the first time around because I expected a lighthearted adventure. It's actually a story about grief. I cherish how the antagonist is built up as a nice guy who does terrible things in the end because he fails at moving on.

#Fireworks is a surreal coming-of-age story that explores several "What if?" Multiverse-scenarios.

It's ambitious in creating a sense for visual poetry, but I still felt like it's just an average story that gets carried by pretty visuals and a great soundtrack.

#DemonSlayer is tightly animated and I really like Zenitsu... but I didn't quite get the hype from S1 alone yet. It's good, but lots of it felt like I had seen it in some way before.

#rascaldoesnotdream of a Dreaming Girl is a perfect ending to S1, closing the last open plot thread (Shoko) and forming the narrative bracket around Sakuta's own mission to save everybody against his own well-being. It also has a bitter-sweet ending for Shoko

#aobuta / #rascaldoesnotdream S1 is a psychological drama series that I enjoyed a lot due to the chemistry of the two main protagonists. Some of the arcs inbetween felt a bit filler-y, but their lighthearted, imo believable relationship made it all up for me.

#DrStone S1 does right what Appare did wrong, imo. You have a genius with fitting quirks (getting lost in science, not getting caught up in emotional turmoil, asexuality), but they are played out so he's likable. Plus science in the "stone age" is a super fun plot.

I had a tough time getting into #AppareRanman. Imho it spent too much time on exposition than on the race and the main protagonist had a lot of unlikable traits.

Kosame, Jing and the excellent german dub kept me going and made it enjoyable enough that I'd watch a S2

The #Ranma 1/2 reboot (2024) is a lot more condensed and closer to the manga, but I still feel like it's not "superior" to the original, but rather "a different adaptation". Both are valid imo.

I'd definitely recommend the reboot to today's audiences with shorter attention spans though

#ranma 1/2 is a Rumiko Takahashi classic and a good mix of romance, comedy and action. I hope it gets a reboot or final season some day.

I also think it's the first time a tv show made me think about gender identities as a concept.

Be careful what you wish for! #ShakuganNoShanaSecond adds so much slice-of-life that there's only one fight in the first 8 episodes. That wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't all filler and all the love triangles would be forced to run in circles. Gets better later.
