We wouldn't ask unless it was serious.
A planning application has been submitted to convert the offices directly above our pub into serviced accommodation/short-term holiday lets. This is very bad news for us, and here is why:
🍻 The staff in the offices upstairs are regular customers, who have their official post-work drinks here most Fridays, and often pop in throughout the week after a long day.
💡They are the ones who keep the lights on in the depths of winter. If they go, that regular trade is gone.
🚋 Air BnB guests are seasonal, and will jump on a tram and spend their money in the city centre.
To add to this, If bedrooms are built above a busy pub and music venue, it spells disaster.
👉 Guests will complain about the noise (music, chat, people smoking outside)
👉 The Council is forced to restrict our licence.
👉 We are forced to close.
👉 Our staff lose their jobs.
👉 There is no funding for Leith Jazz and Blues Festival
Malt & Hops has been part of this community since 1747! We survived the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, but we might not survive this.
It’s not just us.
We are standing with our neighbours - the cafes, restaurants, hairdressers, and other local services. They rely on the office workers upstairs for their daily trade. Tourists don't need a haircut on a Tuesday morning; locals do. Converting these offices kills the ecosystem of our street.
HOW YOU CAN HELP (It takes 2 minutes):
1️⃣ Go to the Council Planning Portal here: bit.ly/SaveTheShore
2️⃣ Click "Comments" and "Make a Comment."
3️⃣ OBJECT to the application (Ref: 26/00362/FULSTL).
Please SHARE this post. Tag your friends who love a pint here. Tag the bands who have played here.
Let’s show them that Leith protects its own. ❤️🍻

Edinburgh
Please read the alt text.
The offices above the Malt & Hops are potentially being converted into accommodation. This could be very bad for business. The Malt & Hops is a braw pub.
