Subtractive colors mixing happens with paints and pigments. Light falls on a surface, and some wavelengths are absorbed or subtracted. This is the normal way color mixing happens. Additive color mixing happens on a monitor. Different color light sources fall so close together they get blended on the visual system. This is how color mixing happens in the eye. 

Here, three light sources, red, green, and b.ue, shine on the wall, making it white. See the second photo. This is additive color mixing. Putting my hand near the wall casts a shadow blocing one or more of the light sources. Now, we are into subtractive color mixing. Where the hand blocks one light source, we are left with a subtractive primary. The cyan on the right, the yellow on the left, and the magenta on the top are these primaries. Where, two shades overlap, that is, two light sources are blocked, you have the secondary colors, blue, red, and green in ares of overlap. Where the all overlap, black! One a side note, the primaries and secondaries for additive and subtractive color mixing are opposite each other. The primaries for subtractive color mixing are the secondaries for additive and vice versa.
