Two seagulls rest on a far offshore rock as the sun begins to break through and the Atlantic flattens out after a stormy day at Acadia National Park. It is late in the afternoon. There are dark clouds in the sky, but also patches of blue and breaks of sunshine. Some rocks just offshore and a rocky islet a bit farther offshore are silhouetted against a dark ocean with bright highlights. The ocean is still a bit choppy with small waves and swells. The Pacific Coast Highway winding along the coastline of northern California. Most of the scene is bathed in bright sunshine, but the sky is a very pale blue with lots of billowing clouds and a thin haze of lingering morning fog. We are standing on a low ridge above a small scenic turnout, our economy rental car is parked below. The 2-lane road winds through an open area of tall grass and scrub growth with a few trees on the fringes. The ocean to our right is a pale aqua in the lingering mists. The distant sea stacks and seacliffs along the coastline are also a bit ghosted.

A sea cliff of varying height borders the beach, backed by a series of rugged wooded ridges. A mountain rises behind them, its top brushed by the clouds. At the far end of the bay, the sea cliff rises to a lofty mountain right against the shore.

Beneath a clear blue sky we are standing on a light gray granite outcrop atop a mountain, looking out over the tops of a mixed forest of evergreens and leafless hardwoods running down the mountainside before us. Just beyond the trees on our left and just below us is a rocky crag with only a few stunted pines growing from crevices along its crest. A large deep blue pond dominates the view below in front of us. To our right a small rounded mountain rises from the pond's shore. Beyond the pond is a narrow, flat wooded strip of land backed by a long ocean inlet and then another relatively fat piece of land with a range of mountains to our right and scattered mountains along the horizon.

A soft blue sky with billowing white clouds. The ocean below is several shades darker, perhaps a cornflower blue. Long swells are breaking against the shore, creating a wide band of froth. We are standing atop a seacliff a couple hundred feet above a large bay, looking out over the top of a thicket of leafy green shrubs with long clusters of purple blossoms. On the far side of the bay a rugged green mountain rises from the edge of the bay hundreds of feet to its wooded summit.

On a gray rainy day we are standing atop the rocky cliffs of a high headland on the Atlantic Ocean with a few leafless shrubs atop and two battered small pines poking up from the cliff side. Waves are breaking on a large beach of beige sand backed by a band of pine trees on the far side and some wetlands and then a small lagoon to our right. A steep rocky prominence with sparse tree cover known as the Beehive rises above the lagoon. Beyond the pines is an empty parking lot for the beach and a glimpse of the park road. Everything else is forests. Other than another pine forest on our left and scattered pines on and around the Beehive the trees are mostly leafless hardwoods.

A bright sunny day with a deep blue ocean. Looking down from a mountain to the rounded crest of a smaller mountain covered with a forest of predominantly pine trees with a sprinkling of leafless hardwoods. There are some rocky patches near the top. The smaller mountain is on a peninsula jutting into a long narrow arm of the ocean. The far shore of this sound is a small village with a number of houses and cottages. It is at or near low tide, a great deal of the shallow floor of the sound is exposed along its coasts.

We are walking through an area of sand dunes along the Pacific coast of Oregon. The sun is shining, although more rain clouds are visible well offshore. We can just see a small strip of the blue ocean along the horizon, frothy waves breaking on the coast. The dunes are tall, made up of slightly pinkish beige sand. There are clumps of grasses Growing along and around the bases of the dunes in many places. A rather large tidal pool lies in front of us to our right between the dunes.

A stormy day along the Pacific Coast of Oregon. Storm waves are breaking on a deserted beach and the nearby sea stacks and sea cliffs. To our right a steep cliff rises from the beach looking dark and brooding in the subdued light. A seagull rests near the top of this cliff while another is just landing or taking off. Far below a single sandpiper is barely more than a dot near the high-water mark waiting for the next wave.
