Pancratium maritimum, also known as sea lily, is a bulbous perennial plant of the Amaryllidaceae family, which grows spontaneously on the sandy coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea. The stem is up to 40 cm high and the leaves are broad and linear. The white flowers are up to 15 cm long and have an intense scent. The seeds, black and shiny, are very light and float, so that dissemination occurs both through the wind and through sea currents. Produces several alkaloids!

Beach beauty: Pancratium maritimum adorns the dunes of many beaches here in Sardinia. It is forbidden to pick the bulbs and flowers, but the seeds are easily found scattered on the sand, for those who want to try to grow them.
