Mount Polley Mine's tailings impoundment failed catastrophically in 2014 and sent tailings into Quesnel Lake, a salmon spawning ground and culturally important Secwépemc place. Chief Phillips states that choosing to conduct a proper environmental assessment would have cost far less than fighting the First Nation in court.
