Great blue heron stands in the water
Unplugged for the John Mulaney show (literally they threaten to throw you out if they catch you on your phone) and then biked home and waved at 3 herons in the canal.
Aka "your frozen lake...why is it still frozen?"

Parliament hill. The Ottawa River in the foreground you can see where the ice is breaking up and cracking as the temperature warms.
Open waters mean more birbs in my life. But it also means I have to tack on an extra ten minutes for running and biking so I can stop and chat at them.
It's a rough life. 😃

Today in Adventures in Gatineau Park, 4 🦌and one 🐻.
Couldn't figure out why the bear was crossing back and forth, head down, (he'd darted back into the trees when he saw me), but then came back out (I stopped when 2 deer came out to cross): acorns! The parkway was covered in them!

We gave one of those blue "difficult" routes a try and the first time I saw one of these signs I said "uhoh"...and uhoh indeed.
It was lots of fun though, if your kind of fun is something that includes nature and excruciatingly painful. 😂

I'd been thinking I hadn't seen any bucks with antlers in all my deer encounters, and today, 2, this guy and his brother who crossed right after 😍

A great blue heron with their fresh catch in their beak. In the background is a group of Canada Geese and a lone Great Egret.
I saw nine great egrets while biking today, but they all took a backseat to this great blue heron eating what I believe was a large crayfish. It was a methodical process, took them several minutes to gulp the entire thing. Fascinating to watch.

It's humbling standing here on something so old. I took them for granted, not realizing that it's very rare to be able to access these pieces of earth that are ~460 million years old. And TIL the boulders are from the last ice age.
We are so small.

These are my favourite parts of the trail- either tree lines or through the little wildflower meadows. The rocky descents and climbs are fun, but I have zero pictures because I am too busy wondering if I am going to fall over. 😂
