Not when she had grown old, and they had discarded her legs because artillery crates were more than her weak flesh could bear. Not even when the flesh-tithe claimed him. Even with his mind cored out, somehow, for her, he had endured even the amputation of his soul. 'How many?' he asked. 'As many as we expected and more." She turned in time to see her husband avert his gaze. Even in shadow, she could see his eye, shining with tears. 'I won't -' Gently, she laid a finger on his lips. 'They've been good, haven't they? These days we never expected?' He was barely able to meet her gaze. 'I'm sorry,' he said. 'For abandoning you. For the man I was. For - ' But his voice trailed off. 'I will never kiss you,' she said. 'When they arrive, they will suffer for that.' Binharic cant echoed, closer now. 'My love...' And he held her. 'We... we had no time.' She stroked his cheek. 'My love. We have all the time in the world.' They looked at each other then. Johanna pulled her husband close. Resting her head against his, she sighed, once. 'Tell me again. Tell me the story of our life. Of where we're going to live. Of the children we're going to have. Tell me all the things we have to look forward to together.' And, just before they died, he did."
