The Shamaness 🌀
Inspired by the exhibition, I created my own drawing of the Shaman of Bad Dürrenberg.
The beautiful artwork by Karol Schauer on slide two served as my reference and starting point.

Front-facing painted reconstruction of a woman wearing an antler mask, further bone and tooth ornaments over eyes and chest, feathers at shoulder, dark background.
The never-ending, never boring story of the #Mesolithic (so-called) #shamaness of Bad Dürrenberg - now with new microscopic evidence of #feathers and a likely elaborate #headdress:

And of course the one which made headlines again recently, the 9,000 y/o burial of a #shamaness from #BadDürrenberg, Germany:

More on the extraordinary burial of the #Mesolithic #BadDürrenberg "#shamaness" and latest analyses of this spectacular find from central #Germany have been reported recently e.g. here in @archaeologymag by...
5 bone awls were buried with the #shamaness at #BadDürrenberg, some even decorated.
The largest of them shows gnawing marks left by a #dog. Not very extensive, but visible. Seems, *someone* tried to make off with a nice catch - but got caught himself, the little tool retrieved.
#FindsFriday: Hollow crane bone from the #Mesolithic burial (c. 9,000 years ago) of the so-called #Shamaness from #BadDürrenberg - a container for #microliths (tiny precise stone blades), put in & taken out through a small opening.
Yes, that’s your prehistoric @xacto knife. 😉
A bit more background on the #Mesolithic burial of a woman (and a baby) from #BadDürrenberg, interpreted as #shamaness due to an outstanding repertoire of grave goods as well as conspicuous physiological characteristics e.g. in this earlier 🧵 here:
#Paleogenomics changing images of the past: Schauer's 2004 portrait of #BadDürrenberg's #Mesolithic #shamaness already was a masterpiece.
Following #aDNA analyses by @MuseumHalle & @MPI_EVA_Leipzig, the reworked painting reflects new knowledge: dark hair, blue eyes, darker skin.
Finally looks like (as recent news had it) @MuseumHalle and @britishmuseum are teaming up to give #BadDürrenberg’s #shamaness her very own spotlight #exhibition:
