Old Stone Wall

This stone wall marks the path to the falls in Shepperd's Dell State Natural Area in Oregon. Vertical color photograph: Starting at the lower left corner, a moss-covered, gray, stone wall with arches in the bottom comes into the image, gently curving left and then right as it describes the edge of a path down a steep cliff. To the left of the wall, shrubs, ferns and other forest undergrowth cling to the steep slope above. To the right of the wall, the slope drops again, dramatically. In addition to the undergrowth, in the middle right of the frame. a mossy tree rises at a slight rightward angle, somehow clinging to the almost vertical slope face.

Lower Shepperd's Dell Falls, Oregon

The lower plunge of Shepperd's Dell Falls, as seen from the Old Highway 30 bridge, diving down the mountain through a sea of greens. Vertical color photograph: the falls, rendered silky white by the longish shutter speed, enter the frame a little in from the top right corner, partially obscured by creekside trees. At about a quarter of the way down the frame, it starts it's 3rd drop, and the steepness of cliff it plunges down changes the vegetation and trees no longer occlude the view of the water as it races down the last 50 feet to the small plunge basin at the bottom. But even during this dramatic descent, the banks are line with ferns and other plants. At the base of the frame, the leaves of a tree high up the opposing cliff, create an arc that cradles the plunge basin.
