2020 - The academic Strike for Black Lives and #ShutDownSTEM day began a mass shutdown of academia that took place around the world.
The main goals of the strike and the shut down were to reflect upon anti-Black racism in academia and STEM and to commit to actions to eradicate it.
Happy #AAPIHM to Brittany Kamai. She is the second ever native Hawaiian to obtain a doctorate in Astrophysics. She is the creator of #ShutdownSTEM which aimed to raise awareness to anti-Blackness in STEM through a day of solidarity during the BLM movement. archive.ph/202201301834...

You might notice that my advice to graduates entering their #science careers follows the core arguments of #BlackintheIvory #amplifyblackSTEM #CiteBlackWomen #CiteBlackSTEM #ShutDownSTEM and many others.
It is no coincidence. These scholars are visionary, pragmatic & pure 🔥

Two very successful Cal-Bridge meetings today: one for scholars, one for faculty. Both generated numerous great ideas to combat anti-black racism and promote equity generally. The challenge is to follow through and embed these actions in our daily practice! #ShutDownSTEM

As so many of us pause today for important reflection as part of #ShutDownSTEM, aka #ShutDownAcademia, aka #Strike4BlackLives, my thoughts go to those before me in academia, including my beloved mother.

In honor of #ShutDownSTEM #Strike4BlackLives I took part of the day to watch 13th on Netflix (they have created a Black Lives Matter list of films). If you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend it. You'll likely cry at least once, curse out loud at least 10 times, and

One way to ensure sustained effort is to fund the many organizations that are in it for the long haul.
Thus, if you have the resources and decide to donate I will happily match your donations up to $500.

So, I'm spending a chunk of #ShutDownSTEM searching for orgs who I feel I could connect to to build that pipeline. I'd love to crowdsource this; we could all use this list. I've started a google sheet over here - please feel free to contribute: https://bit.ly/2UvQ4BE /end
As part of #ShutDownSTEM & #ShutDownAcademia today, I want to think about building pipelines - that outreach is not enough, but bringing students into training opportunities & labs with mentors can have a more lasting impact for individuals. 2/
tl;dr As part of #ShutDownSTEM, I'd like to make longterm connections to Black ocean sci/data sci/env sci training orgs (eg, @Blackgirlsdive) to help build pipelines. I'm making a list of orgs, & would love to share/crowdsource the list to make it better - https://bit.ly/2UvQ4BE
Today we will be participating in #ShutdownStem. We will take this time to learn and reflect upon our roles and responsibilities in addressing systemic racism in STEM and identify meaningful actions we need to take. Please join us. Learn more: https://shutdownstem.aspb.org

I can't just ignore my almost finished online class today for #ShutDownSTEM #ShutDownAcademia but I'm making time to read some of @DrIbram's #HowToBeAnAntiracist today. #BlackLivesMatter
On this day of #StrikeforBlackLives #ShutDownSTEM #ShutDownAcademia when we reflect on the lives of BLK people in academia, I want to draw people’s attention to Brandon Taylor’s novel about what it’s like being BLK, gay, and in STEM @blgtylr

Today, as part of #Strike4BlackLives, #ShutDownSTEM, I commit to educating myself on the data available on structural racism in academia and in our society, and think about a systems approach needed to demonstrate the consequences of racism in health and education outcomes.

I work a lot in the math world on EDI. I came to Bates because I saw an opportunity to do the work there and in the classroom. In solidarity with #ShutdownSTEM #ShutdownAcademia and #ShutdownMath, I'm asking colleagues to think with me about what more Bates can do. #ShutdownBates
Part of today, I take part in #strike4blacklives #shutdownstem and read up on what concrete steps I can implement, read and listen.
As I very rarely encounter racism against me (though as a German in Austria it happens, even at University) I need to listen, follow and know more.
Today I am participating in #ShutDownSTEM and #Strike4BlackLives. I am educating myself to be a better ally and advocate of inclusive & diverse science. Science is political and Black live matter. https://www.shutdownstem.com/
