This is a black-and-white photograph taken in a desolate coastal and desert environment of Puerto Pirámides, Argentina, on the Valdés Peninsula. In the foreground, the image starkly features the decaying carcass of a marine animal—a juvenile right whale—washed ashore and lying on a barren, pebbled beach. The texture and skeletal remains emphasize natural decay and the harshness of the environment. Behind the carcass rise sand dunes and scrubby vegetation, shaped by coastal winds. The light casts strong shadows, enhancing the contours of the dunes and the dramatic, almost haunting atmosphere. The hills in the background appear eroded, adding to the sense of timelessness and exposure. The empty beach, void of humans or animals, evokes deep solitude. The sweeping dunes and motionless brush accentuate the silence. There’s a sense that time is suspended, and the land is indifferent—neither mourning nor celebrating, just existing. This evokes themes of existentialism: we find ourselves in a world that is beautiful but ultimately indifferent. The carcass becomes a metaphor for the human condition—our fragility against vast, impersonal forces. The image, credited to Gregory Rothman (2024)
This might be a bit somber, but given we likely are at the beginning of a war, once again, waged illegally by a GOP president, I felt it appropriate.
Windswept bones lie still—
echoes of the ocean’s breath
fade into dry earth.
