This is a black-and-white photograph taken in a desolate coastal and desert environment of Puerto Pirámides, Argentina, on the Valdés Peninsula. In the foreground, the image starkly features the decaying carcass of a marine animal—a juvenile right whale—washed ashore and lying on a barren, pebbled beach. The texture and skeletal remains emphasize natural decay and the harshness of the environment. Behind the carcass rise sand dunes and scrubby vegetation, shaped by coastal winds.
