A bit of skijoring ASMR: here we're crossing the bridge just below Willow Falls, still running high from spring meltoff prior to the blizzard.

Looking back from the previous photo, we see Skijoring pair of human Jeff and Alaskan husky Tonttu approaching down the middle of the trail. Jeff is in a bright red jacket, goggles and snow pants, with short, wide backcountry-style skis. Tonttu is cutting diagonally across the path, long pink tongue hanging out, focused on something offscreen to the right. On the left, there is a somewhat steep short slope down to the river with a park bench at the top.

The dramatic falls at the eastern, upstream end of the Willow River, cutting through a rocky canyon in winter. The trees and vegetation are brown, and a blotchy layer of white covers the rocks emerging from the water on either side. A good amount of water is going over the multi-tiered falls, powered by recent spring melt prior to the blizzard that brought snow back to the region.

The Ides of March 2026 blizzard was a Goldilocks blizzard for us in the Twin Cities region: about a foot of snow, more or less. A good workout to clear, and enough to provide a nice base for skiing over formerly bare ground.

After one last attempt to ski the groomed end of the Banadad, aborted because of wind debris over the trail, we switched plans and skis to try the Hoks on the "Moose Trail".

Getting there requires first following 1/2 mi of snowmobile trail, freshly groomed this morning!

Day #7, Last day of skijoring 😢

We started out hoping to do one last X-C ski on the groomed E end of the Banadad Trail, but the stick and twig situation was as bad as it had been at George Washington Pines the day before. We gave up after half a km […]

Siberian husky Zeena is ready for skijoring pointing down a snowy trail through pines, fir and other evergreens. Streaks of sunlight cut between the trees and lay across the trail. The trail has been well trampled by hiking boots and paws, nearly obliterating the Nordic style groomed skiing track. Twigs and needles scatter over the snow.

Day #6, X-C Skiing George Washington Pines

This is a "groomed" multi-use, dog-friendly trail close to Grand Marais, so it gets a lot of traffic. You can barely see the track here at the beginning!

Because of the recent winds, everything was scattered with twigs and needles.

A low shot of the trio of skijorers led by Zeena, followed by Tonttu and Jeff. The camera is down at husky level, looking back down the photographer's ski trail. Strong winter sunlight casts stripey shadows of birch tree trunks across the trail from the right, while evergreens rise on the left. A tall, lone pine tree rises from the side of the path behind them.

Jeff has taken the lead to break trail now, so Zeena and Tonttu lead Dale, the photographer down the trail behind him as he skis away. Zeena still leads on a slightly longer line than Tonttu, who doesn't seem to mind being wheel dog. Jeff's rounding a bunch of evergreens on the left, while bright white paper birch line the right.

The snow now has a bit of icy crust, which made breaking trail difficult for the huskies, so we took turns creating a path for them up the trail. There was some trial & error to get them inline and not competing for the narrow track space...

The deep snow has gotten a little firmer, but now has a thin icy crust, so not fun for huskies to break trail on. We took turns laying trail for them to follow. With a bit of trial and error, we managed a lead arrangement that allowed Zeena and Tonttu their […]

One more photo from yesterday: Jeff was about to snap a shot of Zeena and Tonttu leading Dale down his track, when suddenly Tonttu lunged at a Ruffed Grouse who was hiding along the trail.

Dale's dual-wielding tiaks to free Jeff's hands for clearing trail.

Skijoring through an evergreen (spruce?) forest on a sunny day. The trees are tall enough that the needleless branches close over the trail above. The trunks are vertical and the understory branches horizontal, each covered with a couple inches of snow. Bright light filters through the canopy above in spots and stripes. The skiers follow a single groomed track for traditional Nordic skiing, while the huskies stick to the packed trail on the side. Jeff and Tonttu lead, while Zeena and the photographer follow.

Heavier and more spindly-legged Tonttu struggled more in the deep snow, though he did well when the hidden crust layer could support his weight. It was a lot of work! He was happy to relax whenever we stopped.

Zeena, a fluffy gray and white Siberian husky, leads the way across a frozen lake in the far north of Minnesota. There's an island covered in pine and spruce just ahead, and similar trees cover the shores of the lake on either side. It's a gray, overcast day, but the snow is white and bright. Zeena's head and tail are up, enjoying the moment.
