Historians and word nerds! In 1941 American English, would the word "Orient" have referred only to east Asia or to other parts of Asia, too? I feel that at some point it narrowed to refer only to east Asia but I don't know when that happened. Trying to interpret a New York Times article. #skystory
A collage of two photos both taken from the water looking at the Brockton Point Lighthouse in Stanley Park. The top photo is in black and white and behind the lighthouse on the hill in the park is a house, there are also crowds of people in boats on the water and along the Seawall that wraps around the lighthouse. The bottom photo from yesterday shows the red and white lighthouse, some flag poles in the background, a couple of people on the Seawall, and the downtown Vancouver skyline in the distance

The crowd was gathered in 1924 to watch the HMS Hood enter the harbour. City of #Vancouver #Archives, public domain photo.

A collage of two photos with the 2025 colour image on the top and the black and white image from 1925 on the bottom. Both show the Pacific Central train station/bus station in Vancouver. It's a wide neoclassical revival style building. On the 2025 version, the words PACIFIC and CENTRAL are on the top of the building, to the left and right of the main entrance arch. On the 1925 version, the words CANADIAN NATIONAL are right on top of the main entrance arch. There's a big tree on the 2025 version that hadn't been planted or grown yet in the 1925 version

1925 image is in the Public Domain, by Stuart Thomson, Vancouver Archives # CVA 99-3523. The station opened in 1919.

How many of the #puritans of the Great Migration were descendants of the #Normaninvasion ? Because both sides of my family match this. Seems it would give them the financial boost to make the journey, considering strict admission rules as well. #history #skystory
Top: A black and white photo of trees lining a rocky shore, with a fallen try lying across the beach like driftwood. In the background, a budding city skyline with a few multi-storey buildings and a port area with long wharf. Bottom: A paved waterfront path for pedestrians winds along the park on the edge of Burrard Inlet. In the background, a major city skyline with glass towers and skyscrapers, and a long wharf with a roof that looks like sails on top, the iconic Canada Place pier. It's a grey and cloudy day, the photo is in colour.

In 1628 Parliament forced King Charles to admit he was NOT above the law with the “Petition of Right.” This was followed by the dissolution of parliament and authoritarian rule, the assassination of Charles’ favorite stooge, eventual civil war, beheading of a king and a republic. #history #skystory
Trump wants "Patriotic education" just like Mildred Rutherford, the UDC historian general, as she said on November 21, 1912. I swear, I am about to start an underground history class to fill in all the blanks these children are about to experience.
