Looking good now but going to wait a month or two before I strain and bottle this batch #drinksky #ginsky #sloegin #gin #foodsky

Dry (Gin) January…
Today I’ve been decanting, tasting, filtering, tasting, sweetening, tasting, & bottling my latest batch of homemade sloe gin today. Did I mention tasting? 😋 Oh, that sweet ruby nectar! Oops. Hic! 🥴

Sterilised all the bowls and bottles. Strained into a big red bowl with a spout for pouring. Bottles ready on a wooden board.
The sloes in a glass bowl. May make dark chocolate gin treats with them.
Four different shaped bottles of finished sloe gin. It tastes lovely but apparently it needs a whole year now to come to its most delicious. 2 if you can wait!
Holding a glass bottle up the the window light so you can see the true colour. Think it will darken when ready. Kilner written on the bottle of course!
It’s bottling day!!
3 months it’s been sitting in a dark cupboard being turned gently now and again.
Strained. Keeping the gin soaked sloes for chocolate treats.
Sugar syrup added.100g with 50ml water per 800ml gin. Cool syrup and add to taste
Looking clear!

Now we wait! 🍷
Sloe gin filtered and bottled. With the remaining alcoholic berries I've made some sloe gin jam and sloe gin chocolate. Bloody lovely. #sloegin #chocolate #jam
Five litres of Sloe gin, just need a year to mature now, though seems quite drinkable already.

a magenta liquid in a bottle with a homemade lable which says sloe gin - Christmas cards to the left and thinking lights with a painting of rivendell behind

the first bottle of this years sloe gin decanted - in all my years of foraging I have never known an autumn like it for fruits and berries #foraging #winter #sloegin

Sloes, Prunus spinosa, hang from the branches of a shrub in a hedge near home.
The #sloes in the hedges around the fields near our house are laden with fruit this year.
I will probably make #sloegin again, although I actually prefer #sloeport.
When you drain the gin from the sloes, keep them. Add red wine and brandy and wait for a while. The result is ‘sloe port’!
Sehr vielversprechend.
Gin at the ready 😋

I’m ahead of you on that! Excellent crop this year -really big & juicy!
Waitrose had a good deal on the gin at the weekend. Whitney Neil (41.5% proof) was £19 so I’m trying that as it was the base of an award winning sloe gin vs my usual Tesco’s gin & a vodka one this year. Obsessive moi?
#SloeGin
I’ve gone a bit mad trying higher alcoholic gins (41.5%) & much lower conc. of sugar 150g to 500g sloes (the sloes are so big & ripe I think they won’t need the usual 250-400g sugar). I can adjust with honey at the end if too tart. I don’t like using sugar syrup as it dilutes the alcohol..
#SloeGin
Ohh lovely - also with Prosecco, lovely Christmas cocktail! #SloeGin
Best Sloes in years on the hedgerows & Ive started by Christmas Sloe gin at the weekend. Only 200g sugar to 500g sloes as they are so big 🤞 #SloeGin
Sloes hanging off the branch. The sloes are black purple colour, small and round. 5 of them . Blackthorn has a very toxic thorn to be avoided. Can actually cause a severe poisoning. The green leaves are oval and longish. The background is blurry greens.
700g of Sloes picked this afternoon in the wind. There’s a little green leaf on the top of the pile. They are in a metal round weighing scale dish.
Foraging for Sloes to make my Xmas Gin
700g should do it.
Such a bounty of berries this year.

So Stuart and I have been busy today; turning fruits of our early autumnal foraging into sloe gin, apple sauce, pear sauce, and lots and lots of yummy quince jelly. 😋

I love sloe gin so this initiative from Whitby Distilllery caught my eye! And what a great way to get people out into nature! www.whitbydistillery.com/blogs/news/w... #sloegin

Following on from a bountiful harvest of blackberries, apples and pears, which will make plenty of crumbles through the winter, I've been out and picked this lot of sloes. Perfect for making sloe gin. #sloes #sloegin #harvest #thefreezersfull
It’s that time of year for collecting sloes for sloe gin. They look so plump and juicy this year I was very tempted to eat one but know from experience how astringent they are! The colour is beautiful though especially with the waxy bloom.

Making sloe gin is an annual event, crab apple gin is a new departure 😊

Shouldn’t really see sloes until August then you pick them after the first frost. That’s this year’s gin harvest buggered #sloe #sloegin
