Someone Should’ve Told Me the Stove Was Hot Do I create a safe barrier with a "potholder" and touch it anyway? Soak my hand in cold water for a few minutes and then try and touch the stove again—at least then I won’t feel the burn.

If you don’t know what hot means, why would you forego touching the stove? Yes, it's a metaphor ... for those moments when everything stops and you're slapped with a new, profound understanding.
