A guide to slow looking | Tate Watch, listen and read

Excellent article by Tate about 'Slow Looking'. A short, but profound read.

What would happen if instead of 8 seconds, you would look at an artwork for 10 minutes?

One small detail in Wiley's painting that most people might overlook is the background. It looks like royalty and also the frame might be overlooked as well but if you look closely their intricate details on the frame. #hwa3 #slowlooking

i think a small detail that might be overlooked in the painting is the timberlands the man is wearing in the painting. Ik it’s kinda stupid but i feel like it portrays something more “real” #hwa3 #slowlooking

The man wearing camoflauge is an important detail I think most people overlook. #hwa3 #slowlooking

#hwa3 #slowlooking The names of the military leaders engraved into the stones are pretty significant to me. I think the engravings being under the horse signifies something deeper. I also think the engravings might symbolize the fact that these names are now a part of history.

#hwa3 #slowlooking One small detail I thought most people would overlook was his second arm. He’s like raising it. I had to zoom in because I didn’t notice it at first. I feel like when people pose with a raised arm or hand, it simply shows superiority and importance.

#hwa3 #slowlooking In many ways, by having his name's foundation be "broken" by a black man specifically who is imitating his pose, speaks volumes to perhaps Black/POC excellence and achievements.

#hwa3 #slowlooking, a small detail I think people might overlook is the fact that "Bonaparte" is written on the broken ground. Napoleon was not only a known leader but also a dominator and ruler of people.

One small detail I think may be overlooked is that there seem to be 3 names on the rocks in the original, yet a new one which looks to say "Williams" in the Wiley recreation. It's not Wiley's name so maybe it's the person in the drawing's name? #hwa3 #slowlooking

The way the pattern is applied in the background is not perfect. There are multiple areas on the rocks and on the pants where it overlaps. It almost looks like a green screen effect. #hwa3 #slowlooking

One detail I noticed in William's painting is that the background pattern blends over the rock in certain areas. It makes the painting seem out of place in a way. #hwa3 #slowlooking

There are lots of small changes in Wiley’s that are interesting like the horse looking directly at us. In my class, we talk about the only real rule being “intentionality” of your choices. Extra clear when deciding, detail by detail what to include from a source and what to change #hwa3 #slowlooking

My art teachers say that you can tell an artist based on how close they are to a piece in a gallery (to see the details) #slowlooking #hwa3

#hwa3 #slowlooking One small detail in the painting that most people overlook, but I think matters is the writing on the stone-like ground. I thought that was pretty unique, but I also didn't fully understand the message of what was written.

#hwa3 #slowlooking One small but important detail in Wiley's painting is the street wear that replaced the original painting's formal battle gear. The street wear kind of rewrites the narrative of the painting itself (especially the boots)

When I zoomed in the picture I overlooked how the background the red and flowers were blending in with the man on the horse and for a second I thought his hair was also red. So it matters because it blends in the figure. #hwa3 #slowlooking

One small thing people might overlook in the painting would be the swords he’s wielding. He has the cape and the horse but with him having the swords on his waist, it shows the imitation of napoleon while still presenting himself for who he is. #hwa3 #slowlooking

I noticed that in Wiley's work, he had engraved "Williams Bonaparte" instead of just "Bonaparte" on the leftmost rock as it was in the original painting. I'm not sure what the significance of this change is--perhaps it is an attempt at challenging the traditional narrative? #hwa3 #slowlooking

A small detail that most people overlook is the symbol imprinted throughout the painting; though in innitial viewing it seems like its a stylistic choicr for thr background, one can notice that it bleeds into the foreground. Id like to believe its a criticism of conformity.

#hwa3 #slowlooking One small detail viewers may overlook is the background, or more specifically, what the background may signify. The backdrop is a stark difference to the original painting of Napoleon; luxurious vs. naturistic. The artist may have been sending a message through this choice. 🤔

One detail that I feel most over look is towards the bottom the background slowly becomes no longer in the background…. Idk what it means but it seems important to want to all the sudden be in the spotlight #slowlooking #hwa3

One small detail that I feel like people would overlook is probably the background and the frame. Since its giving like royalty and red/ gold, I feel like people would pay more attention to that detail

People might overlook that the person on the horse is modern. He is wearing timberlands. The painting feels like a piece from the Renaissance period with the patterned background. I believe these details matter because they juxtapose histories told and untold.

#hwa3 #slowlooking a small detail i noticed in was Williams on the rocks that is not there in the original. Could this be a reference to will.i.am or just some random william in the word?

I think it's worth noting that he still has the sword on his hip in the painting. With so many things changed from the original, the choice to keep it must be intentional, I think it matters.

a small detail i noticed in the cracks on the surface that the horse it on. i feel like this matters because it can represent the flaws or imperfections in any given situation. this painting would reflect a war as the situation IMO #hwa3 #slowlooking

#hwa3 #slowlooking, I would say, the words in the rocks? or some of the finer details of the figure. The figure and the horse sort of blend into the noisy background. At first glance, I just think that this looks like a mess.

A small detail in Wiley’s painting that most people may overlook and I almost did is the sword on his side . I think it matters because although he is modernized and in streetwear, he still kept an element that seems “old”. #hwa3 #slowlooking

The detail that caught my attention in Wiley's painting is the Person's uniform. It's more modern, 21st-century than Jacques' epic style. He wears military-style camouflage pants and sports gloves, which probably has a deeper meaning that may represent something from that day.

one small detail that I think some people would overlook is the face at the top of the frame. When people look at painting, the focus is on the painting itself and not on the frame or the material holding the painting. #hwa3 #slowlooking
