Photo: A large (even by Redwood standards) Redwood, with a second (more typically, simply) big Redwood growing out of its root structure on the left side of the frame, has gotten a hole in its trunk at ground level that goes all the way through.
Most of the forest floor here is covered in coniferous detritus, giving the appearance of a path leading up to and through a tunnel at the base of the tree that leprechauns, gnomes, or elves could easily navigate. The rest of us could manage by crawling, and one of us did, and he's yet to get all the tree sap out of those trousers and that shirt.
In the foreground, to the right of the frame, there is some Redwood sorrel. Beyond the subject tree(s) and through the larger trunk's tunnel, the forest's lush green shows through.
