The introduction of clinically approved UHF scanners such as the MAGNETOM Terra, together with suitable RF coils and sequences, has been a major step forward for X-nuclei imaging. The increased SNR at 7T enables higher spatial resolution or shorter acquisition time. This paves the way for 23Na MRI to move from research into clinical applications. Tissue sodium concentration might evolve into a useful biomarker for a range of diseases, including renal and muscular disorders, as well as neurodegenerative conditions. Additionally, MRI of other nuclei such as 39K becomes possible in a clinical environment with feasible measurement times. Unlike morphological 1H MRI, these nuclei provide additional information that will provide insights into many physiologically relevant processes, resulting in various potential clinical research applications. Inspired by the recent #UHF meeting in Frankfurt, I’d like to highlight X-Nuclei #MRI on a 7T MAGNETOM Terra by Armin M. Nagel, et al. (University Hospital Erlangen, @fau.de, Germany).
