Not only did #HCPA make it a federal crime to attack #MilitaryFamilies, it was intended to go even further, to "put members of the U.S. military on equal footing with other #ProtectedClasses." The #SoldiersAmendment passed unanimously in 2009, but it stil hasn't been fully implemented. 🤷
The flaws in the #SoldiersAmendment are more clear than its strengths. Termination of its protections five years after a #soldier's “discharge,” for example, is legally ambiguous. But more importantly, no other #CivilRight has an expiration date. https://gijustice.com/blog/soldiers-amendment
