One year ago, the surface of both lagoon islands was raised & capped with new shingle in different grades (thanks to #LIFEontheEdge & the #SolentSeascape). So far, vegetation colonisation has been limited to a gorgeous balance of tufted growth & open shingle, perfect for nesting Gulls & Terns.
๐ฑ New seagrass patches (Zostera marina & noltei) found at Medmerry! Naturally colonised since the 2013 seawall breach โ a great example of passive recovery. Early growth supports Annex I birds & nearby protected sites. Monitoring ongoing!

At the mouths of the Solent Harbours, clouds of Gulls & Terns can be found feeding. As the tide races in, and out of the harbours (or a large vessel squeezes through), upwellings & eddies force fish & morsels of food to the surface which the seabirds devour. Another everyday wonder. #SolentSeascape
The Hayling Plover team are on the beach today playing 'spot the plover'. In recent years, the Ringed Plover breeding site at Gunner Point has started to flourish thanks to an area of beach being set aside, an amazing bunch of volunteers, & community help ๐ฃ๐ #HaylingPloverPartnership #SolentSeascape
