On #ThisDayInHistory in 1942, soon after the #EmpireOfJapan took control of #Singapore, it launched #SookChing: a massive, genocidal #pogrom against the #SingaporeanChinese, under the lie that it was hunting subversives. 40-50,000 civilians were killed in indiscriminate violence.

An attacking Japanese force of about 36,000 killed 5000 defenders and secured the surrender of 80,000 British troops, with the #FallOfSingapore in 1942 on #ThisDayInHistory remaining the largest surrender in UK history. It set the stage for the #SookChing pogrom a few days later.
