Driving an EV 500mi on dirt roads to the Arctic Ocean | Ep 4: Bolt to the Arctic
In this episode, Micah and I start the Dempster Highway—our most ambitious attempt yet and a world-first! Along the way, we encounter the Epic of Gilgamesh and a traditional severed human toe in our whiskey cups.
The remote, arctic, 500-mile dirt Dempster Highway is infamous for being a challenge for gas and diesel vehicles. With our next charging stop a full 2km further than our projected range when we depart, we are noticeably anxious about our attempt to do this. No other Chevy Bolt has ever attempted this feat.
-- About This Series --
I am driving my economy, standard range electric vehicle 8,000 miles (12,000 km) to the Arctic Ocean and back with no backup generator. 1,000 miles (1,600km) of which are dirt road and wilderness. Join me as I begin a world’s first attempt for a Bolt--an EV with a poor road tripping reputation.

After tackling the traditional severed human toe in our whiskey in Dawson City we start the 500mi dirt road Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean with less projected EV range than distance left to the next charger. 😬
