A strange flower - pink petals that open from a straight upright bundle, and droop down, interspersed with twisting long red stamens winding through the petals. On a thickish stalk with leaves that resemble pine needles Scientific Name: Serruria furcellata Specific Threats: Human modification of habitat – urban and industrial development, recreation, pollution; invasive species and disease; climate change and severe weather. Habitat: The northern Cape Flats area (the Fynbos) of the City of Cape Town occurring between Brackenfell, Bottelary and Kraaifontein in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Less than one hectare of habitat is left, and even that has been impacted by development and degraded. Only one plant is known to still be alive in the wild. It is an extremely long-lived plant being estimated to live around 100 years.
