Sea squirts & squid!
ROV pilots filmed these salps and spectacular squid during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition with @oceancensus.bsky.social in early 2025. Salps, also known as sea squirts, are ubiquitous throughout the Ocean, and abundant in the Southern Ocean.
Squid are sometimes longer than a pool noodle, but so far I have only seen one colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), but it was a baby. It's this one @schmidtocean.bsky.social filmed here during dive 802. #MarineLife #SouthSandwichIslands
In honor of World Squid Day, here's a Moroteuthopsis longimana fr #SouthSandwichIslands. International cephalopod awareness days happen each year in Oct — we celebrate octopuses on the 8th, in honor of their 8 arms, and squid on the 10th, to acknowledge their ten appendages (8 arms and 2 tentacles).
Today on #WorldOctopusDay we celebrate the diversity of these incredible cephalopods. There are around 300 known species of octopus, with more still being discovered. The images below were captured on this year's #SouthSandwichIslands expedition with partners @schmidtocean.bsky.social

During recent Antarctic expeditions, scientists examined seafloor features carved by glaciers & revealed glimpses of the intricate ecosystems living at the interface between ice & sea.

Swim sea butterfly, swim! This little pteropod is one of many residents in the Twilight Zone. This delicate marine mollusk travels up the water column to dine safely at the temporarily sunless surface before returning to where it is easier to avoid predators at dawn. #SouthSandwichIslands, 524 m
This flapjack octopus, Opisthoteuthis sp. — a genus of cirrate octopuses found throughout the global Ocean — uses cirri running up & down their arms like fingers, to forage around in the fluffy sediment for small worms, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. #SouthSandwichIslands, 2025, 902 m
This squid — transparent & beautiful — was spotted during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition, half a mile beneath the surface. It’s been 37 days & 14 hours since our last squid post. We had an inkling that it was time for some Cranchiidae, the family that comprises abt 60 species of glass squid.

🎤 Science, squid & stage lights! 🦑
This week, Dr. Michelle Taylor hit the stage at @pintofscience.uk at Coda Colchester - a local music venue turned pop-up science hub - to share insights from the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition.
Cheers to a great way to engage the public with science! 🍻🐙

An exciting moment for us all! We were proud to lead the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition with Schmidt Ocean Institute. The aims of the expedition were species discovery, and to investigate the impacts of submarine geohazards, and the juvenile colossal squid was a particular highlight!
Ocean Census Principal Investigator, Dr Michelle Taylor (@universityofessex.bsky.social), spoke to Maryam Moshiri on #BBCNews The World Today about the team's exciting discovery on the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition: the first-ever in situ footage of a colossal squid. 👇
