I used to live in Nice - 900 miles away - and often made return journeys on BA.
A single fare, not booked in advance, was £35.
Yet £37 is what #SouthernRail charge for a standard one-way ticket for a 45-mile journey.

All the train booking sites initially take you to a page which shows the most expensive journeys, with the First Class box handily already ticked for you.

I have to travel on the exact train for one of the ways, but can change the time for the other one.
No refunds. Booking fee. Collecting from station is a quid extra.

A return adds to the complexity.
Eventually, I ended up booking the return before the outward journey, 'cos they were down to two cheap, 10 quid tickets left (strangely with two trains from Victoria to Brighton leaving at exactly the same time), but will have to change.
