The few writers I have been reading consistently are Chris Priest, M John Harrison, John Crowley and to a lesser extent Ursula Le Guin. All of these had/have literary ambitions, distancing themselves from genre literature.

At an impressionable age I could still be entertained by the likes of Phil Dick, Heinlein, Asimov, Zelazny, even Van Vogt... But almost none of these have retained their interest, as far as I'm concerned. I will read experimental post-war mainstream literature instead.

Although I have read some recent speculative fiction and slipstream, I find myself often drawn to older books and stories, although many of those are dated. Quite a lot of the classic genre-writers of the Golden Age and later decades, were not al that good, literary speaking.

Slowly editing the big book, which will not fit into any genre category. Some might call this SF, but it is as much SF as whatever Le Guin wrote in her later period.
After I'm done, I'm gonna need me a decent publisher. More struggle.

In his new book, the celebrated author explains why we need ‘consciousness hygiene’ to defend ourselves from AI and dopamine-driven algorithms:

That's how it is done: writing in your car, like Vladimir Nabokov used to do. Cars were much bigger, certainly on the inside, than today.

I'm reading, more or less at the same time, Samuel Delany and Henri Miller. There's no excuse for such hubris. But still I do it.

Currently working on background for a 1945 mystery/thriller situated in Berlin, where Hitler might or might not be dead, and the Americans are gathering up scientists for their own military projects, all while the new war (the cold one) is about to start.

It used to be absinthe. I've written a novel with that title, but it had hardly anything to do with the drink.
