My day at Khok Kham Salt Pans in Thailand in search for the highly endangered species, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, main reason for my trip to Thailand. We were really lucky to have found 2, one tagged & one wasn’t. #spoonbilledsandpiper #birds #endangeredspecies #birdingtrip2026

Day 19 of #birdtober is the Spoon-billed Sandpiper! They usually live around the Bering Sea but winter along the coasts of the southern parts of Asia. A lot of their habitat and migration points have been destroyed by reclamation.

🌏🌎 Spoon-billed Sandpiper (Calidris pygmaea)

The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is a small wader with a unique spatulate bill. Breeding adults have a red-brown head and breast, while non-breeding birds are grayish-brown. They breed on the coasts of the Bering Sea and migrate along the Pacific coast to wintering grounds in Southeast Asia. This critically endangered species forages by walking forward with its head down, sweeping its bill from side to side to sift for invertebrates in the mud and shallow water. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

No known subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Critically Endangered (IUCN 3.1)

Know you've been having quality family time when niece starts seeing Spoon-billed Sandpiper bills all over, from Morwick Water Tower on horizon at Warkworth, Northumberland on Boxing Day walk, to candlestick shadow on her cousin's front... #spoonbilledsandpiper #BirdsSeenIn2023

Critically endangered #SpoonBilledSandpiper from #Jiangsu #China Oct 2013 for #WorldShorebirdsDay. Facing multiple threats on its breeding, passage & wintering grounds, but good people are working hard to prevent the extinction of this wonderful little wader. #waders #shorebirds

It took this Spoon-billed Sandpiper (of which there are only 420 adults left in the world), wintering in South China, 30 MINUTES to consume this crustacean.

12 #BOU2021 In 2006 the Spoon-billed Sandpiper's main Yellow Sea stopover in S Korea was destroyed causing a crash in many shorebird populations. @BonnConvention adopted a #SpoonbilledSandpiper action plan http://bit.ly/3sflvi5 & @EAAFP set up an SBS Task Force to implement it.

7 years ago today. Helping @EAAFP gather data on #SpoonBilledSandpiper in #Tiaozini #China. Flat on my belly on the edge of a disused fishpond with 38 of these precious little #waders, some feeding just feet away. Bliss. So heartwarming that the area is now a World Heritage Site.

Delighted #SpoonbilledSandpiper 'Lime 05', mother of 17 'headstarted' chicks in NE Russia, is back at her usual wintering spot, Khok Kham saltpan, Inner Gulf #Thailand. Thanks BCST/BirdLife in Thailand & @theGEF for conserving her #WorkingCoastalWetlands. http://bit.ly/2DRmGxH
