"Awake", a terminally abstract short story about an HVAC system waking up to sentience, published in the fractopian anthology "Ubiquicity". Physically painful to get this finished. No spoons, only existential dread. Available here, docs.google.com/document/d/1...

My first-ever completed novel never got published. I’m still not sure if I will ever rewrite it. But fun fact: it was supposed to be a therapy journal and turned into a space opera adventure! I wrote my feelings through the characters! It helped me in therapy too! #SpoonieAuthChat
The absolute first story I completed was under 100 words, written for my second grade "newspaper" we made on the computer.
Complete with unicorn clipart, of course.

What was the first work you ever completed writing?

That’s fascinating! #SpoonieAuthChat
Yay! That’s awesome. #SpoonieAuthChat
Oh yeah, the pandemic affected the way my brain brained as well. Writing helped me survive. I’m glad you had that too. #SpoonieAuthChat
Because I love the act of writing and I love telling stories. I've wanted to be a writer since middle school, and I just ... Did it. It's incredibly fulfilling and helps keep me mentally healthy #SpoonieAuthChat
That’s a good kind of nagging, no? #SpoonieAuthChat
I don’t think it was a decision, really. I just got possessed by the urge to write, people nagged me into doing writing contests, &next thing I knew, I was technically a published author. it’s still weird to me
#SpoonieAuthChat
I love this! Maybe we are born writers! #SpoonieAuthChat
I’m so glad you have that ability because being creative during the tough times has rescued me as well. #SpoonieAuthChat
I’ve been making up stories in my head since I was a child. I kind of accidentally became an author when I did some autistic blurting to a small publisher while I was dressed as a fashionista Dalek.
I swear this is true. Here’s what I wore while accidentally pitching my book. #SpoonieAuthChat
Because I have stories to tell, at a foundational level. But also because no matter how fatigues or shit I feel, I can almost *always* tell a story. Telling those stories keeps me going on the darkest days.

Can you become something you already are?
I've been creating and writing down stories since I learned to read and write. It's always been a part of my identity.
I took the step of submitting my work to see if anyone else wanted to enjoy my stories.

These stories are so important though. Did you get some positive feedback from trans folks who transitioned during their teen years? #SpoonieAuthChat
I’m gonna shamelessly repost my article on my author website: wp.me/p5J2LK-4EN #SpoonieAuthChat

Oh, thank you!!! #SpoonieAuthChat
I’m glad you’re doing this because it needs to be in the world. Gonna get out the link! #SpoonieAuthChat
i need more black squats at the end of the world.
more black anarchy in my anarchist fiction
so now i occasionally write them
#SpoonieAuthChat
like there is just a *limit* as to how much anarchist fiction i can imbibe that orients around not bathing, low grade protest porn, nettle/foraged soup and other culinary disasters, goblincore references, and punk shows at the end of the world.
#SpoonieAuthChat
I published a story "nobody borrow a cup of sugar anymore" about two black disabled elders who debate tactics to stop ICE raids in South Shore (Chicago)
nobody said it "wasn't possible." but i do think the incredible whiteness of anarchist fiction says as much

I started drafting CHEDDAR LUCK NEXT TIME, my cozy mystery with an autistic lead like myself, soon after my formal diagnosis. I'd already suspected/accepted my neurodiversity, but it was cathartic to deeply explore the topic through fiction. It felt RIGHT.

my undergrad novel/thesis: it traces a young black child who begins exploring philosophy + religion, following the death of her father (a philosopher).
my thesis committee tried to tell me children just "aren't as perceptive/smart as my character"
my response: "i was..."

Right? We don’t even realize sometimes as authors how we’re going to impact people positively just by putting that representation on the page. #SpoonieAuthChat
This sounds like an awesome read! #SpoonieAuthChat
