President calls for consistent sports funding Erasmus Shalihaxwe President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged the business community to provide long-term support to national sports teams for national sports teams instead of one-off donations. She made the appeal on Saturday evening during a fundraising gala dinner for the Brave Warriors, the national football team. “The support for national teams should not only be a one-off but a joint commitment to ensure Namibia excels on all platforms. The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), in particular, faces challenges that require consistent effort, unwavering dedication, and substantial resources, she stated.  The Brave Warriors are four matches away from a possible FIFA World Cup qualification.  Nandi-Ndaitwah said the upcoming matches will test the team’s strength, character, and unity. “I firmly believe that with close cooperation between the government, our private sector, the Namibia Football Association, and indeed, the entire Namibian public, this cherished dream can be realised. Let us be clear: these will not be easy matches. However, with our collective backing, they can overcome any challenge.” During her address, Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted that sports development is one of the priority areas under the newly launched sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).  She said the government recognises sport’s role in promoting youth empowerment, national unity, and economic growth. “It is, however, a regrettable fact that for the past five years, Namibians have been starved of the opportunity to watch their beloved national team play on home soil, a direct consequence of inadequate stadium infrastructure,” she added. She said this issue has robbed fans of experiencing international football locally.  However, NDP6 outlines a plan to fast-track the construction of proper stadiums across the country. “This is not merely about laying bricks; it is about restoring national pride and providing our athletes with world-class facilities,” she said. The government plans to build Confederation of African Football (CAF) category three stadiums in the Karas, Erongo, Oshana, Kavango East, and Khomas regions.  CAF category 2 stadiums will be built in all 14 regions. Each of the 121 constituencies will also get basic sports facilities. “It is absolutely important that our national football team receives all the support they deserve. This is not solely because football is the biggest sports code in our country that commands the largest following and inspires countless young Namibians,” she said. She added that participation in the FIFA World Cup is the highest measure of a country’s football ability.  “It is the pinnacle of achievement, and it is where Namibia’s Brave Warriors belong.”

Young athlete seeks funds to compete in Europe Erasmus Shalihaxwe Young sprinter Ndawana Haitembu is seeking N$40,000 to compete in the 2025 European Athletics season, which runs from 12 to 26 July across cities in Belgium and the Netherlands. Her manager, veteran sprinter Roger Haitengi, said Haitembu needs N$25,000 for international travel and N$15,000 for accommodation.  The 22-year-old is scheduled to compete in four championships during the season. On 12 July, she is expected to run the 100m and 200m races at the Moore-Guldensporenmeet in Kortrijk, Belgium.  Winners will receive €1,000 (approximately N$20,000) for first place, €600 (N$12,000) for second, €400 (N$8,000) for third, €300 (N$6,000) for fourth, and €200 (N$4,000) for fifth. Haitembu is set to compete in the 100m event at the Meeting International de Liège on 16 July.  Prize money for the top five finishers is the same. On 19 July, she is scheduled to participate in the Night of Athletics in Heusden-Zolder, also in the 100m category.  Her final race will be on 26 July in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where the top prize is €400 (approximately N$8,000), with €300 (N$6,000) for second, €200 (N$4,000) for third, and €100 (N$2,000) for fourth. Haitembu is currently ranked number one in Namibia in the 100 m category with a time of 11.66 seconds.  She is ranked second in the 200m with a time of 23.72 seconds. She is also a 2025 USSA Championship finalist.  Haitengi said support for Haitembu would allow her to gain valuable international experience.  “Qualification for major championships with strong performances in Europe can help secure a spot in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, and success in international competitions can inspire the next generation of Namibian athletes,” he said. He added that Haitembu has shown consistency and potential.  “Adequate funding will ensure she can compete at the highest level and yield significant returns for Namibian athletics.”

Sport commission’s N$50-million fund for sponsorless leagues  Sport codes that already have a substantive sponsor to run their individual leagues will not benefit from the N$50 million allocated to the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), says chief administrator Freddy Mwiya. This means popular codes like football, netball, cricket, volleyball and rugby leagues will in all likelihood miss out on the funds. Speaking to Desert FM, Mwiya said the N$50 million forms part of the initial N$93 million budget proposal submitted to the treasury last year. “The N$93 million budget in its totality covers the NSC operations, federation’s support and international engagement,” he said. “We are very happy that we have been prioritised as a sport sector. We’ve asked the federations to work and come up with a modality to be submitted by Friday.” “The NSC will then compile the recommendations from the stakeholders and, thereafter, we will have a meeting with the directorate of sport on the recommendations submitted,” Mwiya said. He added that federatios were requested to motivate how the funds should be utilised during last week’s meet-and-greet session with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture hierarchy. “We asked them to come with the modality on how we will be able to ensure that every federation receives a piece from that,” Mwiya said. He said there are sport codes with regional and national leagues that have no substantive sponsors, adding that the notion that some are more important than others should be done away with. “All Namibian sport codes add value and there is no bigger sport code than the other,” stressed Mwiya. During the meet-and-greet session, minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp stressed the need for clearly defined mandates, greater accountability, and improved collaboration between sport bodies. “Avoiding duplication of functions and strengthening coordination are essential for achieving results and upholding institutional integrity,” said Steenkamp, who urged administrators to “put athletes first”.
